Dreaming light: Alpignano the lamp of Alessandro Cruto
The ecomuseo “Dreaming light: the lamp of Alessandro Cruto” was founded in Alpignano, in the
same plant which witnessed the first mass production of lamps built on Cruto's patent, to gather
and witness his important scientific and human heritage.
The museum develops along three different paths, all of them in a very stimulating and striking
The first one is dedicated to Alessandro Cruto, who was born on the 24th of May 1987 in
Piossasco into a family of masters. His dream was to discover a method of producing diamonds by
the crystallisation of carbon.
In 1880, however, he was the first in Italy who managed to light up an electric bulb with a carbon
filament, using the power of a Bunsen's battery.
In 1886 he inaugurated the “factory of light” along the banks of the river Dora Riparia, the ideal
place for a mass production of lamps which soon spread all over the world.
The second path is dedicated to the history of lighting through its most important steps and the
personal stories of its discoverers.
It shows the mastery and conservation of the fire, the first oil lamps made of argil, the invention of
candles, the torches and chandeliers which were fixed out of the medieval dwellings, the first public
lightings and the diffusion inside the houses and in the big cities, at first as gas and then as electric
The third one wants to set Cruto in his time, between '800 an '900, showing the scientific fervour
that pervaded his time and that encouraged several inventions, all immediately pruduced on
industrial scale and soon introduced in our everyday life: the internal combustion engine, the
telephone, the phonograph, the alternate current motor later applied to electrical appliances, radios
