Project Engineer – Utility Construction 

 

Position Summary: 

 

We are seeking applicants for a Project Engineer to coordinate/supervise fiber optic cable 

construction.  This is a lead position in which the Project Engineer will be responsible for managing 

daily field construction activities, generating progress reports, interfacing with the general public, 

tracking construction pay units, and reconciling billing with construction contractors.    The Project 

Engineer must have strong written and verbal skills with extensive experience managing all phases 

of utility construction.  The applicant must be extremely motivated and task oriented while meeting 

client deadlines. 

 

Essential Job Functions/Tasks: 

 

•  Develop standard operating procedures to streamline project workflow. 

•  Execute company strategy. 

•  Supervise and manage construction inspection of fiber optic cable networks. 

•  Design and implement FTTP/PON networks. 

•  Manage and coordinate utility projects. 

•  Coordinate construction staking and personnel. 

•  Prepare and submit project reports for client and federal agencies. 

•  Coordinate field data collection for GIS facility mapping. 

•  Develop and complete construction plans/drawings. 

•  Complete all other requested job functions, as needed. 

•  Monitor plans and specifications compliance. 

 

Position Expectations and Skills Required: 

 

•  Proven project management experience on large, complex utility projects. 

•  Highly proficient in computer applications including MS Word, Excel, and AutoCAD. 

•  Strong leadership and management experience. 

•  Dependable and well organized. 

•  Excellent analytical and decision making skills. 

•  Strong written and verbal communications skills. 

•  Self-motivated with ability to learn quickly and capable of working on a self-directed basis. 

•  Strong time management and prioritization skills to manage multiple projects and tasks. 

•  Works well collaboratively and independently. 

•  Meets all project commitments on time.

Work experience/Requirements: 

 

 

•  Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required (BSCE/BSEE degree preferred) 

•  At least 5 years of experience actively managing projects in a professional environment. 

•  Prior experience in supervision of utility construction. 

•  Some travel, including occasional oversight stays, required around south central Wisconsin. 

•  Personal vehicle required with mileage reimbursement.
