Evaluative Essay

English language learners are challenged a double challenge: they must learn language and content at the same time. In order to succeed in these classes, ELLs need the literacy, language skills, and background knowledge necessary to improve that new content knowledge.

One way to address that challenge is through effective lesson planning. Depending on their different stages of English proficiency and literacy, ELLs will benefit from the skills that a well-designed lesson can address. For additional tips on language instruction, see our tips for mainstream teachers.
A lesson framework is basically a set pattern of stages for you to follow in your lesson. Different types of lessons have different frameworks. Each framework is essentially an outline; it informs what kind of activity to start with, then what kind of activity to do next, and then how to progress from there- all depending on the type of lesson you want to teach.
The four skills are sub-divided by receptive (reading and listening) or productive (speaking and writing). Each skill has their own particular lesson framework to follow. Receptive skill lessons (reading and listening ones) follow the same framework while productive skill ones follow two different frameworks (one focusing on speaking and the other on writing). Below are summaries of each of the lesson stages with links to a detailed description of each one including examples and video demonstrations.
It’s important to plan and organize a listening lesson in order to support our students and help them succeed at listening in English. By assigning tasks and focusing attention on different aspects of a listening text, we can help students develop their listening skills and identify where they need to improve.
Authentic materials can demotivate learners if the materials aren’t appropriately graded or applicable to their interests. It’s an important consideration to choose material which isn’t too difficult or easy, and also which relates culturally, so adaptation is an important consideration for teachers. Equally important are effectively staging a reading or listening lesson to maximize difference. The below staging is an effective way to teach either a listening or reading lesson.
