The creative television writing and

producing team of Joey Gutierrez and

Diane Burroughs have written for a string of

successful sitcoms. Their current hit is the

show they created, Still Standing, now in its

4th season. Still Standing is a comedy about

a blue-collar Chicago couple working to

raise their three children without losing

sight of the cool couple they used to be. The

show stars Mark Addy, Jami Gertz, Jennifer

Irwin, Taylor Ball, Renee Olstead, Soleil

Borda and Joel Murray. One of CBS Studio

Center’s longest-running current productions,

Still Standing established its home on Stage

20 and the Mack Sennett Building.

Before embarking on their television

careers, Burroughs and Gutierrez were

involved in Chicago’s stand-up circuit

fulfilling a childhood passion for comedy.

Gutierrez’ father, a steel worker, drove him

to the local comedy clubs for two years until

he was old enough to drive himself. From

the tender age of 16 and for the next 13

years Gutierrez performed on stage in

various clubs including The ImprovCaroline’s

Comedy Club, and Catch a Rising Star. He also

made a variety of television appearances on

shows such as The David Brenner Show,

Evening at the Improv and  Caroline's Comedy

Hour. His first paying gig came from

Arsenio Hall. States Gutierrez, “I performed

at the Komedy Kove and earned five bucks a

set. Back then it was a huge deal to me.”

While continuing stand-up at a local

Chicago club, Zanies, Gutierrez met Jerry

Seinfeld. Shortly thereafter he wrote Jerry

Seinfeld’s “uncredited” stand-up material

for the first five seasons of the critically

acclaimed sitcom Seinfeld.

Burroughs pursued a modeling career

in the 80’s but her talents were more than

skin-deep. She produced a monthly

newsletter,  Models Network, to help young

models meet legitimate people in the

industry. The newsletter featured interviews

with photographers and agents, and

provided advice shared by other models.

Having successfully met the challenges of

modeling, Burroughs decided to pursue her

passion for improv comedy and stand-up.

Realizing too soon that opportunities

for women in stand-up were scarce, the

aspiring comedienne, determined to be

more proactive, created Chicago Women in

Comedy. Burroughs explains, “We got our

own venues and rented out clubs so that

talented female comediennes had more

opportunities to make a living and work on

their craft.” Her initiative paid off when this

gained the attention of the press and many

of their shows sold out. The genre of the ‘all

female night of entertainment’ created by

Burroughs continued for several years. The

shows would later be incorporated into a

cabaret with medleys of songs and

improvisation.

Gutierrez and Burroughs met at

Chicago’s famous Second City, the theatre

that launched the careers of such comic

greats as John Belushi, Mike Myers, Bill

Murray, Gilda Radner, and more. They

began writing many scripts together but the

team’s television career began with the help

of good friend, actor, writer, producer and

alumni of Second City Chicago, Timothy

Kazurinsky. “He sent one of our scripts to

Married With Children and they liked it. So

we just packed our stuff and drove out to

Los Angeles. Nine months later Married

With Children bought our first script.

Following the sale of their first script to

Married With Children, Gutierrez and

Burroughs joined the Warner Brothers

Writer’s Workshop. Their first jobs after

graduating the program were executive

story editors on the series Martin.

Additional television credits include co-

executive producers on the series Yes, Dear

for CBS, and The Drew Carey Show.
