About the AreA

Glacier National Park is located in the northwest 

corner of Montana along the Rocky Mountains 

and close to Canada.  It is an extremely popular 

tourist destination for people who love beautiful 

scenery and outdoor activities.  East Glacier has 

fantastic views and is great for hiking and kayaking.  

West Glacier is the park headquarters for Glacier 

National Park and where most tourists choose to 

begin their park vacations.  Essex, Montana is a 

small town about halfway between East and West 

Glacier, famous for the wonderful hospitality at 

Izaak Walton Inn.  Local SWT employers organize 

lots of events for their seasonal employees.

GettinG there

Amtrak, the U.S. national rail service, travels to 

East Glacier, West Glacier, and Essex.  These towns 

are in between Seattle and Chicago on the Amtrak 

Empire Builder train route, so they could be great 

for someone who wants to explore the West Coast 

or Chicago afterwards.  Glacier Park International 

Airport in Kalispell and Great Falls International 

Airport in Great Falls also serve the area.  Within 

Glacier National Park, there is a free shuttle 

service.

WhAt Former sWt PArticiPAnts sAy...

One former SWT participant had a terrific 

summer at the Izaak Walton Inn and hopes 

to go back there to work in the future.  He said 

that while the town is small, it is right in between 

Seattle and Chicago on an Amtrak train route, 

so it's a good place if you plan to travel to either 

of those places before or after your 

summer job.
