Group 118 Abduraxmanova Zilola Theme: Corpus lexicography

Plan

  • Corpus developments and lexicography
  • Native-speaker and bilingual lexicography

Corpus lexicography means that…

  • Corpus linguistics involves the use of computers to rapidly search and analyze databases of real language. These databases are called corpora (the plural of Latin corpus) and they can comprise any principled collection of written or transcribed spoken language.
  • Corpus or corpora lexicography is realized by the neologisms in contemporary life with the examples of computers, communication means and certain terms in electronical life.
  • Corpus lexicography can be spoken and written form. A collection of 450 million words of spoken and written English, available and searchable online, out of which 85 million words are spoken data that include unscripted conversations from nearly 150 different TV and radio programs

Types of corpus lexicography

And also…

Previous corpus and today’s corpus

  • The term “corpus” appeared first in the early in 1980s but corpus based language study has a substantial history.
  • The early examples of corpus linguistics date to the late 19th century Germany.
  • In 1987 german linguist J.Kading used a large corpus consisting about 11 million german words to analyze distribution of the letters and their sequences in German language

But…

  • By the end of the 1960s, Randolph Quirk had set up a collection of transcribed spoken (British) English texts, The Survey of Modern English Educated Usage which was later transformed into a computerized-corpus “The London-Lund Corpus”
  • The 1970s saw the compilation and computerization of the Lancaster-Oslo-Bergan (LOB) Corpus as the British English counterpart of the Brown Corpus.

Corpus linguistics today

  • By the development in technology, especially the development of ever more powerful computers offering ever increasing processing power and massive storage at relatively low cost, the exploitation of massive corpora became feasible.
  • However corpus linguistics is not a mindless process of automatic language description. Linguistics use corpora to answer questions and solve problems.

Here are some samples for corpora

  • There is an increasing consensus that a corpus is a collection of 1) machine-readable 2) authentic texts ( including transcripts of spoken data) 3) sampled to be 4) representative of a particular language or language variety.
  • Software corpus: total, max, min caps lock, alt, ctrl…
  • Corpus of historical american English: Ancien-Agencies, Mortality-Spending, Somoza-Programs, Dictator-State, Exception-Business, Sanctions-Regulations, Provisions-Taxes.

In conclusion, any language and any subject has its own corpora linguistics cause of developing in contemporary globalizing world. The purpose of lexicography on this theme is to differentiate the terms properly and explain to the learner how to get in touch with the neologisms and to solve the issues in teaching a certain language

  • Thank you for attention!!!
