MODULE ANSWERS

The pie charts illustrate the electricity units produced by energy sources in Australia and
France in 1998 and 2000.
Overall, the capability of electricity generation in both countries almost doubled with the
increased from 100 units to 170 units in Australia and 90 units to 180 units in France.
To be more specific, in Australia, Coal continually played the leading role and it nearly trebled
its production from 50 units to 130 units during the two decades. Similarly, Hydro Power also
doubled its figure from 20 units to 36 units, whereas other resources like Natural Gas and
Hydro Power dramatically shrank to 2 units respectively. Nuclear Power was not used as a
resource to supply electricity in Australia in this period.
As for France, Coal and Natural Gas shared equal proportion as they each produced 25 units
of electricity in 1980, followed by Oil, Nuclear Power and Hydro Power in descending order.
However, in 2000, Nuclear Power replaced other resources becoming the most important
electricity producer in France by soaring its figure to 126 units, which accounted for about
75% of the total production. Coal and Oil each produced 25 units of power while other
resources were no longer significant.
