a. Research has shown that if you give something to anotherperson, they almost always feel that they have to return the favour.A little genuinekindness can go a long way.


b. There’s no doubt that we like people who are like us. In otherwords, if we can identify with them and understand them as people,not just business machines, we’re much more likely to want to dobusiness with them. In practical terms, there are two sides to thistechnique: one is to ask questions to find out about the otherperson. But just as importantly, we need to be open aboutourselves, to help the other person to understand us too.
c. This can go both ways. Firstly, show that you’re treating the otherperson as an individual, someone special. That means you remember their name, and maybe you organise something basedon what they like.If you take them to your favourite restaurant, make sure theyunderstand that it’s not just another place to eat butsomething thatyou chose personally, which says somethingabout who you are.
d. Say nice things about the other person. Ifthat person bought you a meal, tell a third person about it and how much you enjoyed the experience. But whatever you do, make sure you sound convincing– there’s nothing worse than false enthusiasm!
e. When another person is talking about themselves, listen carefully and show that you’re listening. This means notjust making ‘listening noises’ like ‘I see’ and ‘Really?’ but actuallybeing interested in the other person.Remember what they aretelling you, so you can mention it at a later point when you talk.
f. Whenever the other person is kind to you, always make sure yousay thankyou. It may seem like a tiny detail, and perhaps anobvious one, but in fact it can make all the difference. Just remember how you feel if someone doesn’tsay thank you to you for your ownkindness!
