MIDTERM TEST.

  1. Circle the correct options to complete the task.

Schoolteachers may be experts 1_in_ their subjects, but they aren’t always right about their students. Some of the most brilliant people in British history were 2_useless_ at school and got terrible reports. In his school report, John Lennon was described as 3_hopeless__ - certainly on the road to failure. Winston Churchill, future Prime Minister and probably Britain’s most 4_skilful_ politician, clearly had a lot 5__of ability__ as a student, but his behaviour was so bad that his teacher wrote, ‘I really don’t know what to do’. Stephen Fry’s teacher didn’t realise Fry had an 6_aptitude for_ English. A fine actor, comedian and writer, Fry was bottom of his class. Robert Graves, a 7_gifted_ schoolboy writer who became one of Britain’s greatest poets, left school with this message from his headmaster. ‘Well, goodbye, Graves and remember that your best friend is the wastepaper basket’. One of Diana, Princess of Wales’s teachers was correct in that Diana wasn’t a 8_talented_ student, but the teacher also wrote, interestingly, that she ‘must try to be less emotional … with others’.

My Favorite Animal Is Lion

I really like the majestic and proud look of lions. Looking at these predators, it is hard to argue that they are the real kings of wildlife: strong, stately, with a fluffy mane and keen eyes. Of course, lions don’t belong in a zoo or circus. These are very freedom-loving animals that cannot be tamed by a human. But lions themselves are able to set their own rules for other animals.

Few of the other predators dare to come to the territory that lions carefully protect from strangers. It is not uncommon to see lions fight each other, this is way males fight for leadership. But in general, lions are quite peaceful if you do not break their rules. That’s why people have the opportunity to photograph these predators in their natural habitat and make movies about the life of these animals.

I really enjoy watching these programs on TV. These videos usually focus on the way lions hunt zebras, buffaloes and antelopes, as well as the way they build relationships within the pride.

Thanks to scientific films, I found out that while hunting, lions are able to run faster than a car, but due to their large size, they cannot chase their prey for a long time. That’s why these predators prefer to sneak up to the prey at a close distance or hunt from an ambush.

Lions tenderly care for their offspring. There is usually only one male in the pack that acts as a getter. Females watch cubs: play with them, gently lick their fur and teach them how to hunt. As a rule, after males grow up, they are kicked out of the pride so that they can have an opportunity to create their own.

Long story short, it’s always very interesting to observe the life of lions. They seem to me not only strong, but also very intelligent animals that are doing everything they can to ensure the existence of their species. That’s why I’m hoping that in the future their population will only increase. And with the help of humans, lions will be able to spread from Africa and India, where they live now, around the globe again just like it was before.
