Nukus (Karabakh: Nókis) is a city in Uzbekistan (since 1932). The capital of Karakalpakstan, in the central part of the territory of the Republic, on the right bank of the Amudarya, at an altitude of 109 m. It is surrounded by the Kizilkum desert in the south and east, and is connected to the Amudarya delta in the west. The average temperature is 27° in June, -6.9° in January, the maximum temperature is 46°, the minimum temperature is -32°. Railway station. 1265 km from Nukus to Tashkent. The Kizketgan canal crosses the city.

In the 60s of the 19th century, there was a farm of Nukus in the place of the present city of Nukus. Since the 1870s, trade, crafts, and fishing have developed somewhat in Nukus, and a hydrological station was built to control the water regime of the Amudarya. Russian colonists stationed a garrison of 1,500 men in Nukus. In 1877, the Russian-Tuzem school was opened.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Nukus village became one of the largest settlements on the south coast of Amudarya. On November 12, 1930, a decision was made to move the center of the Karakalpakstan Autonomous Republic from Tortkol to Nukus Ovu. In 1932, the construction of new administrative buildings began in Nukus. In 1939, the Republican administration moved to the city of Nukus.
The location of the city at the intersection of major highways has led to the rapid development of multi-industry industry. The Nukus-Tashkhovuz, Nukus-Guzor highways are of international importance. 345 km long Navoi-Nukus railway, a bridge connecting Nukus and Khojay-li. The 243 km long Tuyamo'yin - Nukus, 112 km long Nukus, Takhtakpir water transfer tarmout were built. Nukus city industrial enterprises provide 20% of the total output of the republic's industry.
There are more than 50 industrial enterprises in the city. There are metalworking, building materials, food, light, woodworking and printing industries. In Nukus, the industry of construction materials is well developed, there are large panel house construction and silicate-concrete plants, building materials combines, brick, cable factories, and a Karakalpak-Italy joint venture for the production of marble.
There are bread, meat, vegetable-canned, mill and mixed fodder factories, milk-oil, wine-vodka, beer-lemonade factories, and markets. There is a medical enterprise in Nukus that collects and presses the root of the medicinal plant licorice. The products of this enterprise are exported to USA, Canada, Japan, as well as European countries. Light industrial enterprises include the only grass-felt combine in Uzbekistan, sewing and knitting factories, household service combine.
Uzbek, Karakalpak in the city. and there is a printing plant that prints newspapers and books in Russian, and a furniture factory. There are buses from Nukus in different directions. Nukus is connected by air with the cities of Central Asia and Kazakhstan, European countries, Moscow, Mineralnye Vody, Kiev, Volgograd, Baku, Astana, Kyzylorda, Tashkent and all regional centers of Uzbekistan.
Nukus is the center of science and culture of Karakalpakstan. The Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, the Karakalpak branches of the Academies of Arts of Uzbekistan, the branches of the scientific research institutes of terivenerology, oncology, and animal husbandry of Uzbekistan, the Institute of Pedagogy, the University of Karakalpakstan, the Institute of Teacher Training and other higher educational institutions work in Nukus.
There are 43 general education schools, a number of academic lyceums, 2 sports, 2 music schools, 18 secondary special educational institutions, a club, a library, a sports complex, and a palace of culture. In addition to its programs, the Nukus TV studio also broadcasts Moscow, Tashkent, and Ashgabat TV shows. There are 5 hospitals, polyclinics, pharmacies and consultation points, an ambulance station in the city.
