This essay will discuss the role of English as a lingua franca in understanding culture and the evolving nature of teaching English. The reasons were political and ideological, so we cannot conclude that they were purely linguistic. Earlier lingua francas promoted certain values related to ideology, religion, and political power. Of course, English also conveys the morals, ideology and way of life of British and American cultures. In the 1950s and 1960s, English was taught as a foreign language in European schools. In Europe, roles and approaches to teaching English have changed over time. Initially, this mainly related to a shift in focus from teaching the language to building students' knowledge and skills in the target language. In recent years, English has become increasingly disconnected from target national cultures, and many non-native English speakers now use it for international communication. Whose Culture Should ESL Teachers Teach? L2 teachers are influenced by the prevailing educational philosophy, which tends to be monocultural and ties foreign language teaching to the culture of a particular country. English serves as a bridge between many cultures and teachers of this language should be aware of this. New ideas about the function of culture in teaching and learning a second and foreign language open up new research directions. While it is recommended that cultural information be kept to a minimum when teaching English as a foreign language, schools should place particular emphasis on the development of students' socio-cultural literacy and intercultural competence.
