A visit to Carnuntum brings the Romans back to life: architectural masterpieces,
romantic ruins and valuable treasures
and all this only half an hour by car from Vienna
and Bratislava. Uniquely throughout the world, the basic types of architecture in a Roman city
quarter have been reconstructed in Carnuntum in their historical context: a citizen’s house, a
splendid city mansion and public baths. The reconstructions are not fictitious sets or museum
objects, but buildings that can be lived in. The rebuilding itself was mostly carried out using
ancient craftsmen’s technology and done by hand.

are based on archaeological evidence and are not speculation. In the year 2011 the discovery
of the only known, typical gladiator school dating from Roman times was an archaeological

The villa urbana was a splendid city mansion and impressively traces the lifestyle of the
Carnuntum upper class. The findings of about 30 sq. metres of luxurious wall paintings were
The public baths cover an area of around 1,500 sq. metres. Approximately 1,200 cubic metres
of material were used to rebuild the stone walls. All the work was carried out by hand. The
biggest challenge was the reconstruction of the Roman heating system and supplying the pools
with water. In order to display the furnishings and accessories, interdisciplinary research was
necessary to draw an authentic picture of Roman life true to the smallest detail.
