Introduction
In our study, we will turn to the narrative art of Geoffrey Chaucer, whose work has attracted increasing interest in recent years. This is due to the fact that at the present stage, interest in the study of medieval culture and, in particular, the processes of national cultural genesis, in the authors and works that are associated with the origins of the most important national literary and cultural traditions, has noticeably intensified.
In this regard, Chaucer can be called the most important figure in early English literature. The British evaluate his work as the beginning of a literary interest in character, as the origins of a humorous and satirical tradition, representing a significant contribution to the formation and development of the English language and English poetry [63]. New modern achievements in literary criticism and cultural studies provide opportunities for a deeper assessment and study of the nature of the innovations of the "father of English literature". The theoretical and methodological foundations that have developed in narratology as a field of literary criticism also contribute to this. It is narratology that allows us to consider the art of Geoffrey Chaucer in the aspect of its narrative features [28]. Until now, Chaucer's work is considered one of the pinnacle achievements of English literature of the period referred to as Need help writing your thesis? At the same time, for several centuries literary scholars have been trying to terminologically determine the specific nature and methods of presentation of poetic material that distinguishes Chaucer's authorial style, which is the specificity of his narrative art [14]. Researchers note that the originality of Geoffrey Chaucer's poetics does not fit into certain boundaries, is not subject to clear terminological definitions [26].
This is due to the fact that the poet conducts numerous experiments with traditional genres, significantly alters them, creates his own unique style of writing, often subtly or hardly perceptibly balancing between seriousness and irony, including self-irony [16].
Chaucer succeeds in activating the reader's consciousness, his work encourages the reader to various and numerous associations, polemics, encourages dialogue with the author and his characters [12]. Chaucer captivates with the author's unconventional narrative moves and unexpected moral and philosophical ideas. In many respects the 14th century in England is a period of ascending development of its culture against the backdrop of the development of the whole country. Therefore, it is not surprising that it was during this period that the greatest poet Geoffrey Chaucer appeared in the country, who had a significant impact on the further development of English and, to a certain extent, European literature and took a worthy place in its history [54].
At the same time, the era was reflected in the problems of Chaucer's works, and in their pathos, and in his predilection for certain genre forms. Until now, the work of Geoffrey Chaucer remains the subject of active research. In the middle of the last century, there was a peak of special activity in the study of the writer's work. In recent decades, detailed studies of Chaucer's work have continued from the standpoint of greater detail and multidimensionality, which makes it possible to talk about the formation of the "chaucer studies" direction in Russian literary criticism [65].
At the moment, foreign literary criticism has an extensive number of monographs on the topics of researching the cultural heritage of Jeffrey Chaucer. The most authoritative publications can be called Bennctt JA "Chaucer's Book of "The Parlement of Fowls", Brewer DS "Chaucer and his World", "Chaucer in His Time", Donaldson ET "Chaucer the Pilgrim", Kolve VA "Chaucer and the Imagery of Narrative", Winny J. "Chaucer's Dream-F ve hundred years of Chaucer criticism and allusion", Newstead H "Chaucer and his contemporaries", etc. In Russian literary criticism, the study of the literary heritage of the great poet remains the subject of research for the foreseeable circle of Medieval researchers. Among them, first of all, it is necessary to single out the names of M.P. Alekseeva, N.A. Bogodarova, I. Varnaite, S.A. Vatchenko, A.A. Elistratova, O.A. Kaznina, M.I. Nikola, M.K. Popova, Yu.M. Saprykin and others. At the present stage, foreign and domestic literary criticism continues to develop more special and narrow aspects of the work of the English writer. Researchers consider Chaucer's work in various aspects, first of all, in relation to traditions, as well as in terms of aesthetic categories. Need help writing your thesis? Diploma price Consideration of the work of Geoffrey Chaucer from the standpoint of narratology makes it possible to identify new forms of existence of the author and his characters within the framework of the work, allows us to consider Chaucer's skill in creating images of characters. Chaucer's main work, which represents a whole era in the history of English literature and marked a turning point in its development, is The Canterbury Tales, created by the author in 1387-1400. Geoffrey Chaucer began work on them in the 80s of the XIV century, but he failed to complete his own plan due to his death. But even in the form in which the book is written, its bright inner integrity is felt. Chaucer created a broad and vivid picture of the contemporary writer of England, where he presents a whole gallery of full-blooded and lively images. The Canterbury Tales conveys the atmosphere of the author's contemporary turning point. During this period, the feudal system begins to outlive itself. The upheavals that England experienced during the 14th century led to thoughts about their causes [25].
The speeches of Chaucer's heroes contain references to greed, lawlessness, arbitrariness, and violence. Chaucer managed to reflect the level of self-consciousness of medieval commoners, to reveal the richness of human nature. His literature can be called pre-Renaissance, as it actively paved the way for the literature of the Renaissance.
