The Grammar-Translation Method

The Basics:

Originally called the Classical Method because of its use in teaching Latin

and Greek.

The original purpose was threefold:

1.

It would help students read and appreciate foreign language literature.

2.

Hopefully, students would become more familiar with grammar of

their native language through study of grammar in an L2.

3.

The mental exercise of studying foreign language would be beneficial,

even if they never used the language.

Language consists of written words and of words which exist in isolation.

The language is not important, but the process of understanding.

Principles and Characteristics:

The teacher is the authority figure, and students do as told.

The teacher initiates most interaction. The students have little interaction

with each other.

Literary language is superior to spoken language.

Culture consists of literature and the fine arts.

Vocabulary and grammar are important. Vocabulary is often taught through

lists of words.

Reading and writing are the skills focused on. Little attention is given to

punctuation.

The native language is used most of the time in teaching.

Written assignments and tests are given to assess learning.

The teacher provides the correct answer if the students do not know it.

The Techniques:

Translation of a literary passage

Reading comprehension questions

Antonyms and synonyms

Identifying cognates

Deductive application of rules

Fill-in-the-blanks

Memorization

Use words in sentences

Writing compositions

Analysis:

A multilingual class would not be successful with this method, since most of

the teaching takes place in the native language.

Deductive grammar teaching is used. Rules are taught and practiced through

written exercises.

It is considered to be a low stress method of instruction as the majority takes

place in the L1. However, students need to be able to read classical texts in

order to be successful.

Requires few specialized skills of teachers.

Criticisms of this method led to the development of many of the other

methods.
