1. The Renaissance is an important event in European history that stretched from the 14th century to the 17th century. It was preceded by the Middle Ages in Europe and eventually led to the major events of the Age of Enlightenment. In historical terms the Renaissance is important because it led to a major shift in European thought and worldview. This shift eventually led to the developments of the Enlightenment and set the stage for the modern western worldview.
The Pre-Renaissance is also called Proto-Renaissance, which occurred during the 1300s (14th Century CE). It was also called the trecento period, meaning “300” in Italian. This period also included the Gothic Art style, more so the later International Gothic style, and the Sienese School of Painting.
The seven characteristics of the Renaissance are as follows:
Rebirth of Naturalism.
Perspective and Depth in Art.
Create Non Religious Themes.
Privately Owned Art.
Advancements in new technologies such as printing and gunpowder
Shift in balance of power among Europe’s ruling elite
Birth of Humanism -way of thought that focuses on human beings and their potential for achievement
2. Shakespeare contributed to the standardization of the English language in the 17th and 18th centuries. As his work gained importance, correctly spelling words became more common. He created compound words, adverbs, and adjectives from verbs. Shakespeare added suffixes and prefixes to many words.
His works contributed significantly to the standardization of grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Shakespeare introduced 1,700 original words into the language, many of which we still use.
William Shakespeare plays a unique role in the development of the English language. In face, his plays helped shape some of the language still used today. For example, phrases like "elbow room" and "heart of gold" had never been used before. These phrases were invented by Shakespeare and used in his plays.
3. The poem "Brut", Layamon has sung of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table for the first time in English literature. There is a fine blending alliterative lines and rhymed couplets of unequal length. There is also adroit use of similes in the poem.
In "Brut", Layamon has given a pictorial description of a life of Saxon warrior, Blood-shed, battles, wild-life and life in the forests and fields rather than the chivalry and romance of the Norman court. He has set a story of King Arthur with a different background. There is dramatic force, simplicity, and Though there were various dialects in use in the Anglo-Norman times, Layamon's poem "Brut" asserts a national identity.
The poet has acquainted the modern readers with the older historical traditions. Layamon's poem "Le Brut" can be called the first national epic in English; the poem comprises 32,241 lines.
