Theme:Literary genres. 1.Prose in literature 2.Poetry and its genres. Short information Prose - Prose- is a form of language that has no formal metrical structure. It applies a natural flow of speech and ordinary grammatical structure rather than rhytmic structure such as in the case of traditional poetry. Normal everyday speech is spoken in prose and most people think and write in prose form. Prose comprises of full grammatical sentences,which consists of paragraphs, and foregoes aesthetic appeal in favor of clear,straightforward language.
Some common types of prose - NONFICTIONAL PROSE- a literary work that is mainly based on fact,though it may contain fictional elements in certain cases. Examples include biographies and essays.
- FICTIONAL PROSE- a literary work that is wholly or partly imagined or theoretical . Examoles are novels.
- HEROIC PROSE- a literary work that may be written down or recited and which employs many of the formulaic expressions found in oral tradition. Examples are legends and tales
- PROSE POETRY- a literary work that exhibits poetic quality –using emotional effects and heightened imagery but which a written in prose instead of verse.
POETRY POETRY-is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language –such as phonaesthetics,sound symbolism ,and metre to evoke meanings in addition to ,or in place of the prosaic ostensible meaning. Poetry can be divided into 3 main genres: 1.LYRIC POETRY- uses song-like and emotional words to describe a moment,an object ;a feeling,or a person. Lyric poems don’t necessarily tell a story but focus on the poet’s personal attitudes and state of mind. There are several types of poetry that one could classify as lyric poetry. They include: - Elegy-a reflective poem to honor the dead
- Haiku- a 17-syllable poem that uses natural imagery to express an emotion
- Od- an elevated poem that pays tribute to a person,idea,place, or another concept.
- Sonnet-a descriptive 14-line poem with a specific rhyme scheme.
NARRATIVE POETRY NARRATIVE POETRY- tells a story. Also known as epic poetry,narrative poetry is often set to music as ballads. Narrative poems are usually of human interest and include epics, or long stories. - Allegory-a narrative poem that uses an extended metaphor to make a point.
- Ballad-narrative poetry set to music
- Burlesque-a mock-epic poem that tells an ordinary story in a melodramatic way.
- Epic-a lengthy poem that tells a story of heroic advantures
DRAMATIC POETRY DRAMATIC POETRY-also known as dramatic monologue,is meant to be spoken or acted. Similar to narrative poetry,dramatic poetry tells a story. - Monologue-a speech given by one character to another or by one character to the audience.
- Soliloquy-a speech given by one character to himself or herself ; a dramatic representation of inner monologue.
