Primary Sjögren’s syndrome:

Towards a new era in diagnosis, treatment and e-patient education

1.

Ultrasound of the major salivary glands is a reliable imaging technique for diagnosing patients

with clinically suspected primary Sjögren’s syndrome (this thesis).

2.

Ultrasound of the major salivary glands should be used cautiously when patients with Sjögren’s

syndrome are followed longitudinally by various observers (this thesis).

3.

The classification criteria for primary Sjögren’s syndrome need to be refined because anti-SSA

antibody status in combination with ultrasound of the major salivary glands can be used as a shortcut

(this thesis).

4.

Salivary gland parenchyma in patients with primary Sjögren’s restores with rituximab treatment

(this thesis).

5.

Baseline histological characteristics of parotid glands are a key to a personalized treatment

approach for primary Sjögren’s syndrome patients (this thesis).

6.

Understanding the currently available online information on xerostomia and Sjögren’s syndrome

requires advanced reading skills (this thesis).

7.

Patients with Sjögren’s syndrome should be made aware by clinicians of non-validated e-

information resources (this thesis).

8.

Specialists should actively participate in the development and maintenance of validated e-

information platforms (this thesis).

9.

Systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials are the highest level of evidence in health

sciences and thus demand the highest level of research skills.

10.

Clinicians are sometimes able to cure a disease, they can often treat it, but the least they always

can do is to provide comfort (Hippocrates, 460 BC).

11.

In the very near future, the vast majority of the routine appointments with clinicians will be

replaced by online consultations.
