13 characteristic features of the vowel consonant distinction in English.
Consonants are defined as the sounds articulated by temporary obstruction in the air stream which passes through the mouth. The obstruction made by the articulators may be `total’, `intermittent’, `partial’, or may merely constitute a narrowing sufficient to cause friction. In the articulation of consonants almost all articualtors are involved.
Vowels on the other hand are the sounds that are produced without any obstruction in the air passage. Among all articulators, only the tongue is involved in their production. All vowel sounds are voiced and all of them are oral sounds as during the production of them the soft palate is raised and hence the nasal cavity is completely blocked.
Another important distinction is, that consonants often appear as the marginal elements in syllables. They seldom form the nucleus, or centre, of the syllable except in some cases. Usually there will be a vowel at the center or nucleus of a syllable. You will learn more about this in the rubric on Syllables and Syllable Structure
When it comes to describing and classifying consonants and vowels show apparent distinction. Consonants are identified or classified in terms of voicing, place of articulation, and manner of articulation. Since there is no obstruction of the airstream in the production of vowel sounds, and since all vowel sounds are voiced and oral, we cannot describe vowels in terms of their place of articulation, but are left with the manner, in which they are produced.

14 articulatory and acoustic classification of English consonants (in comparison with Uzbek
In comparing the consonant systems of two languages, it is suitable to begin with the inventaries of phonemes set up in both languages. The inventory of the English consonant phonemes comprises the following 25 phonemes: /p/, /b/, /t/, /s/, /k/, /g/, /n/, /ŋ/, /l/, /m/, /h/, /v/, /d/, /z/, /ƒ/,/з/, /tƒ/, /dз/, /w/, /r/, /tƒ/, /ө/,/∂/, /f/ and the facultative or optinal phoneme /м/. The inventary of the Uzbek consonants also consists of 25 phonemes /n/, /б/, /ф/, /в/, /с/, /з/, /т/, /д/, /ш/, /ж/, /к/, /г/, /х/, /ғ/, /қ/, /ҳ/:, /н/, /л/, /р/, /й/, /тш/,-/ч/, /дж/-/ж/, /м/, /нг/, /тс/ц//: Some of the English consonants, for example, / ө,∂,м/ can not be found in Uzbek. Likewise, the Uzbek consonants /х, ғ, қ/, тс /ц/ do not exist in English. We can arrogate the differences in the inventivies of consonant phonemes of both languages into a single table. As we look at the table of consonants we find differences in the number and articulation of some consonants. For example, the Uzbek consonants /т,д/ are articulated in a more formalposition, being dental and dorsal, than the English consonants /t,d/, which have an alveolar and apical articulation. The Uzbek plosive (stop) uvular /қ/ does not exist in English. It is articulated in a more backword position than the backlingual consonants. Among the fricatives the Uzbek /c,з,ш,ж/ may be produced in a more frontal position of the mouth cavity than the English counter-parts /s, z, ƒ,з/. The Uzbek /c,3/are dorsal, /ш-ж/ are palate-alveolar consonants. The English /s,z/ have apical, alveolar articulation with round narrowing and /=,/ being also palate-alviolar, have two foci in articulation. Besides, the consonants /x,ғ/ are specific for Uzbek and cannot be found an English. The class of affricates is similar except the Uzbek /тс/ц/ which is borrowed from Russian
