1. How is your city changing at the moment?
"Samarkand is the mirror of the world, the Garden of the Soul, the Pearl of Islam, the Pearl of the East, the center of the universe." Located in the valley of the Zarafshan River and surrounded by the peaks of the Pamir-Alai Mountains, this fabulous oasis on the border with the Kyzylkum Desert has never lacked attention. Another name, the City of Famous Shadows, points to Samarkand as a witness to the change of historical periods. About 40,000 years ago, generous nature brought primitive man to this area. Interestingly, the city is rightfully considered to be the same age as Rome and Babylon, based on the fact that archaeologists date the first settlements in this area to the sixth century BC.
Today Samarkand is one of the oldest and most important cities in Asia, the third largest city in Uzbekistan. More than half a million people live in the city of Samarkand. It is famous for its ancient culture and architecture, as well as an eventful history. In 1925-1930 it was the capital of Uzbekistan, and in 1930 it was replaced by Tashkent. The traditions of ancient crafts have been carefully preserved in the city: embroidery, gold embroidery, silk weaving, engraving on copper, ceramics, carving and painting on wood. Thousands of tourists visit Samarkand every year to explore its various attractions. Modern Samarkand is divided into two parts: the old city and the new city, which developed during the times of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The old Town includes historical monuments, shops and old private houses, while the new town includes administrative buildings along with cultural centers and educational institutions. The state and official language in Samarkand, as in the whole of Uzbekistan, is Uzbek, which is one of the Turkic languages. As in the rest of Uzbekistan, Russian is de facto the second official language in Samarkand. In Samarkand you can enjoy delicious Uzbek cuisine. New residential buildings, shopping malls, amusement parks and so on are being built.
People in the city are friendly. Welcome to my beloved city of Samarkand!
2. Do you prefer to live in the town or the country? Talk about the good and bad things about each.
I prefer to live in a city because i think that life in a city is always more exciting and more comfortable than life in a country or in a small town.
First of all, in cities there is usually something to do or somewhere to go. In the city there is a large access to education an there is easier to find good and ineresting job. Moreover there is a good selection of cinemas, galeries, theaters or restaurants, where people can spand their free time. There is always something interesting and it is impossible to be bored. In the cities, there are a lot of good shops where we can do the shopping easily and quickly. Moreover there are many sports facilities such as swimming pools, gym halls or tennis courts where people can spend their free time and practis their favourite sports.Young people in cities are in better situation, than young people in village or in a small town, because young city- dwallers can go to clubs, discos, and spend their leisure time. They have also more opportunities to meet someone. However living in a big city have some disadvantages. Havy traffic is big problem. Fumes emitted into the atmosphere polutte the air and many city-dwallers suffer from serious medical disorders. Moreover there are many car accidents every day and the noise never stops. There are many cars and it is difficult to find a parking place especially in the centre. In addition the crime rate in cities is very high.
Summing up, in spite of all these disadvantages, living in a city is more exciting, interesting and never dull for me.
