9. THE CURRENT STAGE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL
GEOGRAPHY
Plan
1.Development of geography in the period after independence
2.Division of economic and social geography
The disintegration of the former Union, the formation of new independent republics-
sovereign states-also led to some kind of change in economic geographical views. Especially in this
regard, the influence of the previous "All-Union Division of Labor", highly centralized socialist
planning, the emergence of forms of gross ownership and their deregulation, the transition to market
relations was strong.
During Independence, economic and social geography has been developing in a new
political and economic context. First of all, it should be noted that the main ideas and concepts of
this science: territorial division of labor, economic zoning, territorial production complexes
etc.have retained their scientific significance even now, they are required only by the “Communist”
worldview, an approach free from the principles of planning a highly centralized totalitarian system.
Now let's consider the structural structure of our science in the current period (see drawing
2). Here, Economic and social geography is mainly divided into 3 blocks or parts, and the main of
them-"Native Science", of course, is economic geography.
It is known that the literal economic geography included industries directly related to nature,
namely fishing, forestry and agriculture, mining. It then expanded and took the territorial aspects of
the social sectors into its own research framework. But at this stage, economic geography will not
be fully "socialized". Consequently, Block 2 performs the function of a binder, that is, representing
the suffix "and" in the so-called Science. This section refers to the areas directly related to the
population, its socio-economic life-activity.
At the same time, it should be noted that "socio-economic geography", "social and economic
geography" are not. In the first, the main emphasis is placed on sociality, that is, on the population,
but its economic function is also not forgotten, and these two important fronts are seen in harmony
with each other.

In fact, the population, man, is above all a social category. But he is also a creator, a
consumer of material and spiritual wealth created by him. It is known that a person comes to the
world to live, but to live it is necessary to work. Consequently, if there are 5 people in the family
only 2 of them can be economically active. However, these two people are also a consumer, that
is, a social category, among all family members.
The 3rd nchi block included disciplines that relate to a narrow sense of social, or rather
social geography. They are areas related to the rest, treatment, beliefs, behaviors of people and,
so to speak, the territorial aspects of their social life.
In addition to the 3 blocks above, the fourth block has also been forming in recent years.
It is a political geography that can include such as geopolitics, military geography, electoral
(electoral) geography, geoconflictology, limology (science of borders). Such a further expansion
of our science has caused it to be called "economic, social and political geography" in some
countries (the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republics). It will be more
correct to call all of them "social geography" in one word, referring to the possibility of the
emergence of some other science of "geography" in the future.
