66. AMAZING ANIMAL SKIN 
Just like humans, animals have skin. It protects them from danger and allows them to survive in nature. 
Here are some animals that use their skin to protect themselves in special ways. The hippo’s skin is known for 
a red-colored sweat that looks like blood. This red sweat protects the hippo from strong sunlight, just like 
sunscreen does for humans. There are also certain chemicals in this sweat that protect the hippo from 
annoying bugs. Moreover, it kills off any bacteria on the skin so that wounds don’t get infected by dirty 
water. People might think that the zebra’s stripes make the animal highly visible. In fact, they act as 
camouflage. The stripe patterns help the animal blend into its surroundings. Furthermore, when a big group of 
zebras keeps close together, their stripes blend. This makes it confusing for their main predator, the lion, to 
pick out any one zebra to attack. Some animals mimic other animals’ skin to protect themselves. Coral snakes 
are poisonous, and their skin has a red, yellow, white, and black pattern. King snakes have a similar color 
pattern, but they are non-poisonous. In this way, king snakes fool their predators into thinking that they are 
poisonous. Like all things in nature, each animal’s skin has changed over millions of years to help it survive in
