FAST FASHION Do you like to follow the newest and latest fashion trends? In the past, most clothing stores only sold new styles for each season. Nowadays, though, clothing retailers sell new styles every few weeks. They copy designer and celebrity styles and sell them cheaply. This is known as “fast fashion.” Fast fashion clothes are very popular because they are inexpensive and trendy. However, they also have problems. Their cheap price allows many people to follow rapidly changing fashion trends. As a result, people buy clothes more often and throw them away, creating more waste. Even worse, the materials used to make these clothes are harmful to the environment. They are often made from artificial materials, such as polyester, acrylic, and nylon, which cannot be easily recycled. And a single polyester dress takes about 200 years to break down! Another negative point of fast fashion is how it is made. Shoppers want the latest styles at the cheapest prices. So, clothing companies must produce these clothes quickly. The fastest and cheapest way to do this is by taking advantage of cheap and abundant labor in developing countries. Many of the factories there are unsafe, and the workers must work long hours for little pay. Many workers get paid only one US dollar for working all day! Trends change all the time. What happens when one style is no longer fashionable? Many clothes may end up in the trash. In fact, the United States alone throws out 11 million tons of clothing every year. Because of all these problems, we must think carefully about the clothes we buy. Download 0.68 Mb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
