Abstract—The Internet of Things (IoT) is an extension of the 
existing internet that enables contact, interaction, and internet 
functioning between different devices or physical objects. IoT 
technology is used to put forward innovative concepts and 
exponential development for smart home in order to boost 
people's living standards, but its unique characteristics and 
interconnection characteristics do bring new security challenges to 
smart home. In smart home, the security of residents needs 
reliable, intuitive and automatic network system to assist 
management, solve the risks faced by IoT smart home, and truly 
reflect the advantages. This paper summarizes the current 
situation and development trend of Internet of Things and smart 
home, studies the security problems in smart home in detail, puts 
forward some solutions for these problems, and finally points out 
the research direction of future work.

I
NTRODUCTION 
With the development of the times, technology is also in 
progress. All the devices around us are smarter, clearer and more 
automated than ever, which enhance personal performance and 
efficiency. In the past few years, the Internet of things (IoT) and 
smart home have become popular day by day. In the ideal 
version of the future, through the smart home technology based 
on the IoT, all smart home devices can communicate with each 
other whenever and wherever, and provide connections for 
everyone, which has changed people's lives. 
A. Internet of Things
Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most popular terms in
this modern era of the world. The Internet of Things is an 
extension and expansion of the network based on the Internet. It 
is a huge network formed by combining various information 
sensing devices with the network, realizing the interconnection 
of people, machines, and things at any time and any place.
Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most constructive 
wireless communication models in the 21st century. Nowadays, 
IoT technology is playing main role in human life, and its 
application has changed our life, made it easy and comfortable. 
IoT has a wide range of applications in different fields, for 
example smart home, smart city, utilities, wearable gadgets, 
transports & logistics, industrial, agriculture, telemedicine and 
healthcare, etc. IoT has had a disruptive impact on these 
industries, and become a key driver of innovation and success. 
In recent years, with the rapid growth of IoT devices and 
applications, which has become more and more important in 
reducing human labor intensity. In the IoT environment, all 
devices can be connected with the internet, the penetration of 
IoT in many areas is rapid and subversive. In the next decade, 
the depth of influence and the adoption rate of IoT technology 
will be immeasurable. One emerging area of investigation in this 
paper is the application of IoT in smart home. 
B. Smart Home
Smart home is one of the key components and applications
of Internet of Things (IoT). It is an advanced technology which 
is helpful in daily life and effectively serve users by 
communicating with various home devices based on IoT. All 
home devices can be easily monitored and controlled 
automatically through internet. The advantage of this 
technology is that it will reduce the workload of people and 
provide users with security, comfortable living and energy 
management. 
In recent years, people’s interest in smart home system is 
increasing. The smart home system describes and records the 
status of the home devices with an intuitive interface, so that 
users can communicate, monitor and remotely control different 
devices with simple operation. ZigBee, Bluetooth, Wireless 
LAN (Wi-Fi), Wi-MAX, and the Global System for Mobile 
Communication (GSM) are the main communication 
technologies used in smart home automation systems.
