INTRODUCTION
The demand to learn a foreign language has been increasing day by day and the study of foreign languages is of great importance in strengthening international relations and diplomatic relations. The role of literature in the process of language learning is unique. Through literary texts it is possible to study not only the language, but also the culture of other countries. The development of realism in England in the 19th century is very specific in comparison with the same phenomenon in other European countries. The intense formation of capitalism defined the strong correlation of personality and society which lead to early shaping of critical realism in England. One of the most prolific representatives of this movement was Charles Dickens, the realist-writer.
The actuality of the course work. Alternating between England and France, A Tale of Two Cities discusses the implications of the French Revolution on both nations and how it affects the lives of both its French and English characters as the French Revolution becomes a foreboding presence and a source of conflict in the novel. As a historical novel, A Tale obsesses over the connections between the past and present, creating a set of parallels and images through a series of historical retrospections done by both the narrator and the characters. This thesis is concerned with how this historical retrospection results in both contradiction and ambivalence.
