sites and his office. He set up separate accounts to handle his
growing payroll and construction operations. He reviewed the
financial statements from his accountant to make sure the
ratios and percentages stayed within limits.
Bubba was beginning to feel the pinch, as he had supplies
to buy and crews to pay. The cash just didn’t seem to be com-
ing in as fast as before. He bid on more jobs, being sure to be
low bidder so he would get job. Now he had to start juggling
the progress payments, to pay the FICA taxes. Work on one of
the first jobs had stalled. It seems the crew assigned to work on
it had been goofing off. Next month, a couple of clients with-
held payment for nonperformance. He went to the banks to try
and get a loan. His accountant could not produce financial
statements because his wife had fallen drastically behind on
the books.
Bubba is on the brink of entering the self-employed death
spiral. Even in these small details, you can tick off a number of
things he did wrong. He did not cost his bids to make a profit.
He did not supervise his workers. He was careless in his budget-
ing and had no idea what his cash flow position was.
Butch, on the other hand, seems to be doing most things
right. He’s costing his bids carefully so he’s not bidding to lose
money on a job. He is using his accountant in a value-added
role rather then treating the position as an expense only. He
looks to be watching his cash flow and capital budgeting posi-
tion. He’s spending some time in the field supervising his work
crews. In short, he understands accounting. If the books that
Butch read didn’t include the one you’re reading now, he must
have read one very much like it.
It seems so simple—but there are 10 Bubbas for every
Butch. That’s also why Bubba is working for Butch now and a
lot happier. All that intolerable paperwork and daily decisions
associated with running a business are behind him.
