LITERATURE SUBJECT TEST
The Literature Subject Test uses poems and prose selections to test your skill in reading literature. By
“reading,” we mean your ability to understand and analyze a literary text. The test does not presuppose
that you have read any particular group of authors or poets. Nor does the test require that you be familiar
with obscure terms. You are, however, expected to know basic terms such as tonealliterationstanza,
and blank verse.
The test uses 60 multiple-choice questions based on different selections. The number of selections
per test is usually seven or eight, divided approximately equally between poetry and fiction with an essay
or bit of drama thrown in occasionally. Questions may ask about the content of the selection (for example,
the writer’s meaning) or about the form of the selection (its organization or literary effect).
Here are some sample questions:
The Eagle
He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ringed with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.
