Jackie: For this week's podcastsinenglish.com I'm talking to Ana Luisa who comes from Portugal. Hi.
Ana: Hello
Jackie: Ana Luisa is a language teacher, but she's a language teacher with two hats.
Ana: Yes. I teach Portuguese to English students and English to Portuguese students.
Jackie: What came first?
Ana: Well, I went to England and I did a certificate in language teaching.

Jackie: Was that to teach Portuguese or to teach English?

Ana: To teach Portuguese.

Jackie: Right

Ana: To English. They were evening classes so mostly adult students, a range of ages from 23 to 72 I think.
Jackie: Did you enjoy that course?
Ana: Yes, because I had to design the course myself.

Jackie: Oh, okay, so that was interesting.

Ana: Yes, it was um… fun, it was fun. I was living and teaching in Lincoln which is not a very er… large city in The Midlands.

Jackie: Was it difficult finding students who wanted to learn Portuguese?

Ana: Altogether I did it for three years and the first year there were twelve people in the course.
Jackie: Oh right okay. So when you said you did it for three years, that means after you got the teaching certificate, you then became er… an employed teacher?

Ana: Yes, in a local college, yes. Two evenings a week.
Jackie: Oh wow. And then you said that you also teach English to Portuguese students. Where did you train to do that?
Ana: A few years later when I came back to Portugal um… I did an intensive month course in Lisbon.

Jackie: Tell me about the Portuguese students that you have, the ones who are learning English. Are they very different to the… the English students wanting to learn Portuguese?
Ana: Yes, because now, my classes, my students are all young: nine, ten year olds.
