On the banks of the Jamna River near the city of Agra, Shah Jahan built it after his death (July 7, 1631) for his beloved wife Arjumand (known as Mumtaz Mahal Begum, Mumtaz Bibika Rauza). Bricklayer Muhammad Hanif from Kandahar, Muhammad Syed from Multan, local craftsman Ismail Khan Rumi, Muhammad Sharif from Samarkand, took part in the construction of the mausoleum.
