DESCRIPTION OF POETRY GENRE IN ENGLISH LITERATURE John Keats as the Heath Ledger of his time: famous, talented, and destined to die too young. In fact, Keats was only 25 when he died in 1821. Like Ledger, Keats a pretty dashing figure. The ladies crazy for him. Heck, the men swooned for him, too. When he died at the tender young age of 25, he had already penned poems and letters that would become the cornerstones of the Romantic movement. Keats never lived to see the public appreciate his work. In fact, during his life, pretty much every paper and publication rejected him. It was only after his death that his poetry collections (including such all-time hits as "Ode to a Nightingale" and Endymion) received the critical acclaim they were due. A poem is a composition that uses words to evoke emotions in an imaginative way. Although poetry is a form of self-expression that knows no bounds, it can be safely divided into three main genres: lyric poetry, narrative poetry and dramatic poetry. Keep reading to see examples of poetry genres in each of these genres. Lyric Poetry Examples Lyric poetry uses song-like and emotional words to describe a moment, an object, a feeling, or a person. Lyric poems do not necessarily tell a story but focus on the poet’s personal attitudes and state of mind. They use sensory language to set the scene and inspire emotions in the reader. There are several types of poetry that one could classify as lyric poetry. They include: elegy - a reflective poem to honor the dead haiku - a seventeen-syllable poem that uses natural imagery to express an emotion ode - an elevated poem that pays tribute to a person, idea, place, or another concept sonnet - a descriptive fourteen-line poem with a specific rhyme scheme When you read a lyric poem, you are transported to a different time or place. Writing lyric poems is an effective way to illustrate your perspective and share a special moment with others. Understanding genre is not only helpful for us when we are trying to choose what poetry we want to read; it is also key to being able to analyse it. Let's look at poetic genres, some definitions, and examples so that we have a solid foundation from which to begin exploring poetry in more depth. Download 132.5 Kb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
