ANTH 239 Peoples and Cultures of North America
3 credits
This course is designed to provide students with a thorough introduction to the many varied
peoples and cultures found in contemporary North America. While the primary focus of the
course will be upon the societies of the United States and Canada, some consideration is also
given to Mexico and neighboring Central American nations as Latin American peoples and
cultures are of increasing importance throughout the North American continent. Via
examination of the peopling of North America, the influences of geography, migration
patterns and key historical events, students will leave the course with a good basic
understanding of both the dominant national cultures and those of the many varied ethnic
groups that constitute the multicultural mosaic of modern life in North America.
