Word level approaches can search for the occurrence of key words. These systems
can even be trained, without having prior knowledge, to identify and select the
key words.
Continuous speech recognition where, at the extreme, parallel speech recognisers
for each of the candidate languages compete to provide the best (most sensible)
transcription. In many ways this is a brute-force approach, that would only be
sensible for a relatively small set of candidate languages.
As alluded to above, the driving forces behind automated language classification are
predominantly telephone call centre-related at the present time. The advent of a Star Trek
universal translator (or, if you prefer, the in-ear Babelfish) is still some years away, and the
present bias of the Internet is toward visual media rather than auditory communications.
Having said that, for single-digit sized groups of languages, classification accuracy can
exceed 90%, indicating that the technology is maturing quickly.

While neither automatic speaker recognition nor automatic speech recognition can
approach the abilities of the average human, automatic language recognition systems
exceed average human abilities (partly because few humans can speak 10 languages).
In this way, despite the disadvantages of the technology developed to date, it can find
ready application outside the research laboratory.

Speech recognition
Entire texts have been written on the subject of speech recognition, and this topic alone
probably accounts for more than half of the research and development effort in the fields
of speech and audio processing. The ability to communicate to a computer, without the
use of a keyboard, has been around for almost as long as electronic computers have
been with us. Yet, despite the significant research effort, speech recognition systems are
elusive apart from in a few niche areas.
