Case study
Listening is often considered one of tge easiest aspects to improve while learning English. However, many learners struggle with concentration. Therefore, while prepearing for the exam( IELTS, CEFR), they complain about their concentration to their teachers. In this case, majority of the teachers suggest they should focus on only interesting material. As an example, during the practice journey as an English teacher, I came across the same situation that they were still having problems to do listening tasks. Surprisingly, most of the students in 10th and 11th classes claimed that they could do excellent when the listening topic was interesting. To make sure, then I did a small research giving them a 'boring' podcast and 'interesting' song as a task ( both of them were their own choices). The results were quite differnt - pretty good in the song while poor performance in the podcast even though the level of the two tasks were similar. Because of this, they said they enjoyed with the song, but they lost concentration in the podcast because they did not want to listen.
Are the 'boring' materials effective to improve listening concentration?
Should we also use or recommend to listen to 'boring' listening rather than only focusing on enjoyable ones?
