MONITORING

Students need a lot of support when preparing for a
writing activity. Monitor and encourage students to note
down ideas in groups. This will help them plan their
paragraphs.

In a class with students of different abilities, you will need
to adapt your monitoring to take into account the different
levels of ability. Some will need help with ideas whereas
others will need language advice. Take this opportunity
to correct students’ language in a more private situation.
Remember that some students lose confidence if they are
corrected a lot in front of the group.

Give students time to write their articles. Remind them
to use the time linkers to show the order of events.
Monitor carefully offering help and suggestions as
necessary but also encouraging self-correction. If time is
short, this activity can be done for homework.
