PLAN
1.|Characteristics of the approach
2.Advantages and Disadvantages of the method

Audio-Lingualism
Audio-lingualism is a method of foreign language
teaching where the emphasis is on learning
grammatical and phonological structure,
especially for speaking and listening. It is based
on behaviourism and so relies on formation as a
basis for learning, through a great deal of
mechanical repetition.

History of this method
Historically speaking, the Audio Lingual method was widely used in the 1950s and
1960s, especially in the United States. It was developed as a reaction to the
grammar-translation method of teaching foreign languages, which was considered
ineffective for developing oral proficiency. It was also influenced by the need to train
soldiers in foreign languages during World War II, which led to the development of
the Army method or the Aural-Oral method.
The Audio Lingual method has largely fallen out of use as a methodology, as
cognitive views of language learning and communicative accounts of language have
led to other methodologies. However, some aspects of it, such as drilling and error
correction, are still used by some teachers in certain contexts.

Examples(Oral Drills method)
Oral Drills method is a teaching method that is
carried out repeatedly by training students to
master the lesson and be skilled in carrying out
the given training tasks. The goal is that students
can understand the material and remember the
material on an ongoing basis. It is a technique
that has been used in foreign language classrooms
for many years. It involves the teacher modelling
a word or a sentence and the learners repeating it.
There are different kinds of drilling, such as
choral drill, substitution drill, or question and
answer drill

Advantages of Audio-lingual Method
Focuses on All Four Skills
The teacher focuses equally on all the four skills –
reading, listening, writing, and speaking and teaches
them separately.
Focus On Language Laboratory
In this method, there is a lot of focus on the language
laboratory too and it is an important teaching aid.
No Use Of Mother Tongue
Similar to the direct method, there is no use of mother
tongue in this method either.
Importance of Dialogue
In this method, dialogue plays a highly dominant and
important role.

Disadvantages Of Audio Lingual Method
Teacher-Dominated Method
This method is highly teacher-dominated as the teacher plays an important role.
Meaning Is Neglected
Sometimes, the proper meaning of words and phrases may be neglected in this method.
Mechanical Method
This method can be a bit mechanical due to memorization and pattern practice.
Limited To Certain Learners
This method may only work for hardworking learners.
May Get Monotonous
The drilling and memorization of pronunciation may get tedious and monotonous for many
learners.
The audio-lingual method can be used for teaching a large group of learners. It demands drilling,
memorization, and pattern practice. Advantages and Disadvantages of Audio Lingual Method in
Teaching English with Examples

Teacher's Role
According to Richards and Rodgers (1987), teachers must provide varieties of drills and tasks to keep learner's
motivation. "Failure to learn results only from the improper application of the method, for example, from the
teacher not providing sufficient practice or from the learner not memorizing the essential patterns and
structures; but the method itself is never to blame" (Richards & Rodgers, 1987).
The main principles that every teacher should use in audiolingualism, according to Brooks (1964) are:
Minimization of vocabulary until all common and simple structures will be learned.
Teaching new vocabulary only in the context.
Learning the structure of second language without explanation, memorising the patterns of sound, order and
form.
Subordination of the native language to the second language by translating foreign language into mother tongue.

Learner’s role
The learner should be guided by skilled training techniques in order to produce correct
answers.
Basically, students' results depend on the way instructors will direct the lesson. At the
beginning students cannot always understand the meaning of learning materials;
however, in Audiolingualism learners should repeat carefully all the information that is
presented by teacher, trying to imitate the instructor's intonation and pronunciation as
closely as possible.

Conclusion
Audio Lingual method is a historical method of foreign language teaching that focused
on the oral skills of the learners through repetition and drills. It was based on
behaviorist theory and influenced by the military needs of World War II. It had some
merits in terms of providing intensive practice and feedback, but it also had some
drawbacks in terms of ignoring the cognitive and communicative aspects of language
learning. It has been largely replaced by other methods that are more learner-centered
and interactive, but some of its techniques can still be useful in certain situations.
