Children are learning to focus on the informa-
tion their fingertips are sending to their brains.
When they are gathering objects, they are using their
open attention to scan the environment for something
that is just the right size and texture.

Games for 3- to
6-Year-Olds

T
he world of three- to six-year-olds has expanded enormously. They have
learned many fundamental skills. Their bodies follow their mental
instructions; they know how to interpret sensory information. They
have the beginnings of a social awareness and a concept of space, time,
and sequences. Their social and physical world and their sense of what is out
there have enlarged far beyond what is in their home and neighborhood to
include their community and even a sense of the bigger world beyond what
they’ve seen.
The games in this part of the book reinforce this new awareness while still
helping children pay attention to what is immediately in front of them.

My Story Is the Best Story
Writing can be a challenge for children who aren’t clear on how to organize
their material. If children are shown when they are young the logical steps
used to construct a story, they will find writing much easier as they get
older.
This game gives children firsthand experience in how to plan, edit, and
organize material on an always-intriguing subject: themselves.
The actual writing of the story is optional.
