Show your potential navigator how to find where you are on the map. Then
show him the place you want to go. Together
work out the path you would
need to take to get where you want to go.
If this is a brand-new activity for your child, start it
by laying out a map
on the kitchen table and working out the details together.
Next do the activity in the car with the navigator telling the driver
which direction to go to get to your destination: “Take
a right on Star Lane,”
“Now take a left on Coastal Road,” and so on.
Start with a simple path that requires only a couple of turns. As your
child’s
skills grow, allow him to navigate more complicated routes.

Once he has the concept, give your child the big
assignments on family trips
to find the way to the desired destination.

Children are engaging their spatial awareness and using open attention as
they get a general overview of your area. Then they
are using their focusing
skills to work out the specific route to get you where you want to go.
Police Report
Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to go about everyday errands and be there
only in body, not noticing the details of life. Next time you have to wait in
line at the bank or grocery store with your child, try this game to keep both
of you focused in the moment.
