Teenagers are learning that they can deal with what happens by being open
to alternatives and focusing on solutions. Having
the solution ready in
advance allows them to pay attention to what is actually happening.
Postcard Diaries
Next time you take a trip with your teenage child, buy him postcards that
he can use to make a memorable diary.

Let your teenager select a few postcards each day
or at each destination
during your trip. As he writes entries on the back of each postcard, he is
making a diary for that period of his life.
He can either mail the postcards home to himself or
make a hole in one
corner of each postcard and string them together with a ribbon or key chain.

You don’t need to leave home to do this activity. Find postcards that depict
various places in your town or get some from a local museum.
If you
go to a museum, go to the gift shop first and buy postcards that
show items in the museum’s collection. Have your
teenager look for each item

as you tour the museum. Then he can use the cards to write about what the
item
made him feel or think, or just about his trip to the museum in general.
He can also make puzzles (and keep his words very private) by cutting
up
a postcard into smaller pieces, which he can put together later.
