Children are getting experience concentrating solely on one sense and begin-
ning to distinguish and note differences and similarities between aromas.
They are using their focused attention by noticing differences in smells,
which leads to an open awareness of the variety of smells around them
daily.
Some children will smell everything, especially before they eat it. That
lets you know that their olfactory sense is, for them, one of their strongest
means of perception.
What’s in the Sock?
Identifying objects with just her fingers is a skill that will absorb your
child’s interest and has a practical use. Think how convenient it is to have
sensitive fingers when you’re fumbling for a missing item in the back of a
drawer.

Hide the object inside a sock. Ask your player to feel inside the

⽧ Have your child feel only the outside of the sock
to identify what is in it.
⽧ Allow your child to be the one to gather up
objects and put them one by one into the
sock, and you be the guesser.
