Basketball

• - It is a team sport consisting of five players from each team.
• - It was invented by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States. Dr. Naismith is a Physical Education Instructor.
• - The first basketball game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as a goals. There were nine players on each team.

Basketball

• -Basketball quickly became popular, and the first professional basketball league, the National Basketball League(NBL) was formed in 1898, the NBL merged with the Basketball Association of America (BAA) to form the National Basketball Association (NBA).
• - The objective of the game was to shoot the ball to the opposing team’s basket, and the team with the most points in the end of the game wins.

Court Dimensions and Venue

• - A basketball court may come in many different size. In the National Basketball Association (NBA), the court is 94 ft. long by 50 ft. wide(28.7 by 15.2m). Under International Basketball Federation (FIBA) rules, the court is slightly smaller, measuring by 28 by 15 meters (91.9 by 49.2 ft.)
• - Basketball can be both played indoor and outdoor. An outdoor play of basketball is called ‘ Street basketball’ it can be much smaller than the traditional basketball court.

• Shooting
• - It is the skill that involves directly scoring points

• - is the most important fundamental for all players.

• - is the other option of to move the ball around the court outside of dribbling.

• Rebound
• - it is a tactic used by the defensive team to regain possession of the ball or to steal the ball from the opposing offensive player.
• Shot Blocking
• - It is when the defensive player deflects a field goal attempt from the offensive player to prevent a score.

Assigned Basketball Positions

• Center

- Center is the tallest player on each team, playing near the basket.

Power Forward

- Playing near the basket while rebounding and defending tall player, however power forward also take longer shots than centers.

Small Forward

-Plays against small and large players. They roam all over the court

Assigned Basketball Positions

• Point Guard
• - They runs the offense and usually is the team’s best dribbler and passer. The Point Guard defends the opponent’s point guard and tries to steal the ball
• Shooting Guard
• - The shooting guard is usually the team’s best shooter. The shooting guard make shots from long distance and also is a good dribbler

Rules of the Game

• The ball must stay in bounds
• The player must bounce, or dribble the ball with one hand while moving both feet
• The main rule is not to foul

Officials

• There are two referees, a scorekeeper, time keeper, and a shot clock operator.

Referees

- They enforces the rules of the game.

Scorekeeper

- They are responsible for recording the field goals made.

Timekeeper

-They are the person who adjust time for temporary stoppages.

Shot Clock Operator

- They controls a separate timing device with a horn that shall have a sound distinct and different from the game clock
