An interdisciplinary research field has crystallised over the last decade in an attempt to harness these capabilities. The idea is to apply DNA to calculations in apparatus, from which research scientists expect there to be many advantages. With molecular computers specific problems concerning information science and cryptography can be solved better than with conventional computers. This project deals with the development of a DNA computer from a chemical point of view, taking information technology aspects into account. Demand for hydrogen is set to increase over the medium term because it can be utilised in for power internal combustion engines and fuel cells. Classic hydrogen production methods involve oil, natural gas or electricity (electrolysis). This research project concerns purple bacteria which, with suitable nutrients, sunlight, heat, etc., are capable of producing the desired gas using an environmentally friendly method. The objective was to locate hydrogen producing bacteria (purple bacteria) in the environs of Braunau, breed them and prepare them to produce as much hydrogen as possible in self-built hydrogen generators. The advantage of this regenerative hydrogen production system is that it represents a completely new way of producing a storable energy source using sustainable raw materials and solar energy.
