THE ISSUE OF CATEGORIZATION IN LINGUISTICS

Presented by Esonova O'rozgul

GENERAL VIEWPOINT

Categorization is a basic cognitive process. Humans use language to categorize, primarily through the nominal category. More particularly, categorization enables them to better organize the world around them in order to make learning and decision-making easier
Grammatical category refers to a set of specific syntactic properties of words that can cause those words and/or other related words to change in form for grammatical reasons

LINGUISTIC CATEGORIES

Lexical category, a part of speech such as noun, preposition, etc.
Syntactic category, a similar concept which can also include phrasal categories.
Grammatical category, a grammatical feature such as tense, gender, etc.

LEVELS OF CATEGORIZATION

Subordinate level categories
Superordinate level categories
Basic level categories

RESULTS

Subordinate level categories display low degree of generality and a low degree of class inclusion.
The categories at the basic level, or generic level, the most culturally salient and have the most basic cognitive functions.
Superordinate categories are found at the top of a folk taxonomy. They display a high degree of generality and provide only very abstract information, which are sometimes called category-wide attributes.
Concept categorization enables the student to classify (or to recognize the classification of) objects or concepts that belong to a group.

WHAT ARE THE TECHNIQUES OF CATEGORIZATION?

There are five general methods of categorization of values and they will be reviewed briefly in this section: Integer mode, Categories, Boundaries, Codes, and Multiple subsets.

More formally, categorical (or category) learning is the process of establishing a memory trace that improves the efficiency of assigning novel objects to contrasting groups. In addition to facilitating the categorization of objects, categorical knowledge also facilitates a variety of cognitive processes.

CONCLUSION

A semantic class contains words that share a semantic feature. For example within nouns there are two sub classes, concrete nouns and abstract nouns.

An object can be categorized in different levels of abstraction, including the superordinate (e.g., animal), basic (e.g., bird), and subordinate (e.g., duck) levels.

Subordinate level categories are found at the bottom of folk taxonomies and diplay a low degree of class inclusion and a low degree of generality. As members of basic level categories, subordinate level categories are highly specific.

A superordinate level category is a category placed at the top of a folk taxonomy and thus displays a low degree of class inclusion and a high degree of generality. They include basic level categories.

A WARM THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU!
