the importance o f self-knowledge. In the complicated plots o f
Shakesperian comedies the heroes and heroines often select w rong
partners because they have formed wrong opinions about their
own characters, that is they do not know or understand their own
s e lf and feelings. But their mistakes are treated in good hurnor
and the com edies end happily, because at the end o f the plays the
characters understand them selves and those they love.
“Twelfth Night”
This com edy centers on the typical Shakesperian con flict
between true and false emotion. Duke Orsino tries to convince
him self that he is in love with Countess Olivia and grows more
absorbed by his feelings after each rebuff received from her. But
Olivia is in deep grief for her dead brother and renounces all joy
o f life.
The solution o f the complicated plot is provided by the twin
sister and brother, Viola and Sebastian. They become separated
during a shipwreck. Finding herself stranded in the country o f
Illyria, Viola disguises herself as Cesario, a page, and enters the
service o f Duke Orsino. The duke sends; the page to w oo the
countess Olivia for him. But Olivia falls in love with Caesario.
The marriage o f Orsino to Viola and Sebastian to Olivia brings
the comedy to happy ending.
Shakespeare’s Sonmets
In addition to his plays and two narrative poems, Shakespeare
wrote a sequence o f 154 sonnets. His sonnets were probably
written in the 1590s but first published in 1609.
