It is the teacher’s responsibility to find texts that relate to the above-mentioned language skills. Teachers can usefully analyse those text types according to functions and exponents. Examples of text types: Letters, Messages, Advertisements, (audio/ video/ printed), letters of recommendations, presentations on agrarian issues, video conferences, Product descriptions (See Table 2.11): Table-2.11. Product description Describing a cotton picker The cotton picker is a machine that automates cotton harvesting in a way that reduces harvest time and maximizes efficiency. Video conference Stating the aim of the conference Hello colleagues! The main aim of this conference is to provide you with an update on the new additions to the range of available harvesters. Indicative topics and notions: Participating in webinars, Voice messages/listening and responding to voice messages, Text messages, Making blog posts, Making a telephone conversation, Arranging meetings, Taking minutes at the meetings, Tele- conferencing, Correspondence relating to production, Correspondence pertaining to methods and terms of payment for particular types of agricultural project. The assessment is based on the following tasks: a) Possible authentic tasks: (including people, context and purpose) Scenario: You are an independent businessman who is opening a mill and you want to buy a new elevator from a foreign company. You have just read an advertisement from a newspaper about a company which produces elevators. You are interested in buying the product from this company. Make a telephone call to the sales manager and conduct a detailed negotiation about the price, discounts, and delivery of the product. b) Possible pedagogical tasks: Scenario: Students listen to a telephone conversation between a customer and a company sales manager. Then do a multiple choice activity to check whether they understand specific information. Potentially useful supplementary materials. Wherever possible teachers should try to use authentic materials. The published sources below may also be useful. Teachers will need to set aside time to identify and adapt authentic materials for use in class.
