In Feb. 2006, six months aft er the expul- sion of 1,600 families from Gush Katif and destruc- tion of their homes and businesses, we were made aware that there were young people anxious to marry but their par- ents did not have the means to make the weddings and provide basic household items for these couples to set up their new homes. Th us was born the Gush Katif Kal- lot Project, which has provided to date, basic household items and a cash gift to each of the chatanim and kallot of Gush Katif who turn to us for help. Even seven years later, there are still many families struggling fi nancially, and coping with PTSD and medical prob- lems far exceeding the general popula- tion. With poorly planned legislation, the Israeli government has not covered all compensation for homes and busi- nesses, and has certainly not dealt with the medical and psychological ramifi ca- tions of its wicked actions. Th ough meant to be a temporary project, we are witness to the genuine fi nancial need and emotional support that we provide with this special chesed. In recent years we have had to reduce the gift package from $1,800 to $1,000 due to economic downturn and dif- fi culty in raising funds. Every penny raised goes to the project as we have no “offi ce” expenses. We are committed to continuing this project until there is no longer the need. Th e families repeat all the time that we are the only ones who still remember them and their continued diffi culties. Please allow us to continue to help them marry off their children honorably and generously. • Make a virtual shower for a Gush Katif Kallah in your home or commu- nity • Twin a simcha of yours with a wedding of a Gush Katif chatan or kal- lah • Send us your generous donation in memory of a loved one, or in merit of a Refuah Shlaima for someone you know Regarding a Refuah, the Steipler Gaon, zt’l, explained that in our morn- ing tefi llot, “Ailu Dvarim She’Adam Ochel Perotaihem ....” the mitzvah of Hachnassat Kallah comes between Bi- kur Cholim and Levayat Hamet. Th is is a strange placement for a happy mitz- vah. Th e Steipler explained that the reason is, this mitzvah has the power to be a buff er between Bikur Cholim and Levayat Hamet. Savo- ry or sweet, these calzones can be served as a main dish or a side dish for a dairy meal, depending on how big you make them. MAKES 8–10 CALZONES Dough : 4 cups fl our 1 tablespoon active dry yeast 1 tablespoon sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 egg 5 tablespoons vegetable oil 1½ cups milk, lukewarm 1 egg, beaten Sweet cheese fi lling 1 package farmer cheese 1 egg 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar ½ cup sugar ¼ package vanilla instant pudding mix ½ cup canned crushed pineapple - optional Savory spinach-cheese fi lling: 9 ounces frozen spinach, defrosted 1 cup cream cheese 1½ cups grated mozzarella cheese 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon garlic, minced ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste) 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper (or to taste) Method: To prepare the dough, in a large bowl, with an electric mixer, combine the fl our, yeast, sugar, salt, egg, oil, and milk. Mix until a soft dough is formed. Smear the dough with oil and cover with a towel. Let rise in a warm place until dou- bled in size approximately 1½ hours. Punch down and let rise a second time for an ad- ditional half hour. Punch down again. To prepare the sweet fi lling, in a medium bowl, combine the cheese, egg, vanilla sug- ar, sugar, pudding mix, and pineapple. To prepare the spin- ach fi lling, in a medium bowl, combine the spinach, cream cheese, mozzarella, egg, garlic, salt, and black pepper. Preheat the oven to 350º F (175º C). Line 2 bak- ing sheets with baking paper. To assemble the cal- zones, divide dough into 8–10 equal parts. On a fl oured surface, roll each ball of dough to form a round disc of ½-inch (2 cm.) thickness. Spoon a layer of fi lling on half of the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edge. Fold the dough in half over the fi lling and seal the edges with moist fi ngers. Transfer the calzones on the lined baking sheets. Brush with beaten egg. Bake until golden, about 20 minutes. David Wright - NY Mets STARTING ALL-STAR 3rd Baseman By: Ephraim Fischbein of The Country Vues Full Name – David Allen Wright • Born – Norfolk, Virginia on December 20, 1982 • Height & Weight – 6-0, 210 • Favorite City To Visit – My hometown, Tidewater, Virginia • Car I Drive – Lincoln • Favorite Athlete – Anyone who plays for my fantasy football team. I’m a big fan of fantasy football! • Player I’d Love to Talk Baseball With – To talk hitting with Tony Gwynn would be a treat. • Life After Baseball – Coaching little league somewhere. If Not a Baseball Player – I probably would have been a police officer like my dad or an engineer like my brother. • Players who have helped me at the start of my career – Joe McEwing, Cliff Floyd and Mike Cameron were all great to me when I was called up to the Major Leagues. • Hero Growing Up – Cal Ripken, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles • Behind My Back People Say – That I’m a good person and an OK baseball player. • Influences – My parents who sacrificed much time for me. They took me to little league games and practice. They were great role models. • Advice – To have fun with what you are doing. It seems like just yesterday I was called up and now 7-8 years later, it’s passing by so quickly, so I try to have fun each and every day with what I am doing. • Situation I Thrive In – I love to have the bat in my hands late in the game with runners on base! • Any Pre-Game Routines – I like to get to the ballpark the same time, eat the same foods and do the same stretches. • Biggest Disappointment So Far – To not have accom- plished so far what I feel we should have. Th e showering time must be limited to what is needed and the water may only be as hot as is necessary to remove the dirt or sweat. • For mitzvah purposes, showering and bathing with hot water is permitted. According to many opinions, this includes taking a shower as usual in honor of Shabbos. • Men who use the mikvah every single Friday may use it this week as well as long as the mikvah is not hot. • Swimming for a therapeutic purpose is permitted during Th e Nine Days. • Children under the age of six may swim in a kiddy pool or run through a sprinkler but this may not be done as a group or in a public location. Food Limitations Wine, grape juice, beef, chicken and any of their derivatives may not be consumed during this time. • In this context, the defi nition of derivatives is if it would make a consumer fl eishig, and in the context of wine, if its taste is discernible. • Th ese foods are permissible at a meal honoring a mitzvah such as the Shabbos meals, a bris or pidyon haben. • Th ese foods should not be fed to children (of any age) un- less it is necessary for their health. Siyum A siyum is a meal that celebrates a completion of a sig- nifi cant book of Torah. Th is includes a Gemara tractate, a seder of Mishna, or a book of Tanach that was studied with the Rishonim. Since this meal celebrates a mitzvah, it may include meat and wine. • One should not rush to complete a book in order to make a siyum specifi cally during this time. Likewise, one should not celebrate the completion with a festive meal if he does not normally do so the rest of the year. • Up until the week in which Tisha BAv falls, all guests that would normally be invited throughout the year may participate. • During the week in which Tisha BAv falls, only those who have completed the texts, their immediate family and an additional minyan of men may be included. In institutions that all members usually eat together (such as a camp,) all may participate in the siyum meal. Havdalah During Th e Nine Days, the wine or grape juice used for havdalah is preferably given to a young child to drink. • Th is child should be too young to understand the concept of mourning but old enough to comprehend the concept of making blessings - approximately six years old. • Th e child does not recite his own blessing before drink- ing but relies on the Hagafen that was mentioned during havdalah. • If no child is available, one should drink the wine himself. • Some have a custom to use beer for havdalah during this time. ZENO • Estates • Real Estate • Traffic Tickets • Accident Cases • Criminal Matters • Real Property Taxes • Business Transactions THECOUNTRYVUES.com The Nine Days & Visiting Day #1 Edition, 2013 56 The Torah teaches us, “U’shmartem es mitzvosai v’asisem osom – You should guard My mitzvos and perform them.” Rashi explains the word u’shmartem to refer to the study of the mitzvos and the meaning therefore would be that we can only properly fulfi ll the mitzvos if we learn how to do them correctly. Thus, the Mishnah in Pirkei Avos teaches us that a boor, an ignoramus, cannot be a yirei cheit, a sin fearing person, because his is not familiar with the laws. So, for example, we cannot fulfi ll properly the mitzvah of prayer without studying the defi nitions of the words of our prayers. So too, we cannot converse correctly if we haven’t studied the laws of Lashon Hara. And it goes without saying that we cannot observe Shabbos properly without learning the complexities of the thirty-nine prohibited labors of Shabbos. Perhaps, Rashi also means something else as well. It is only with the proper study of the mitzvos that we can perform them feelingly and meaningfully for, if we haven’t studied the reasons behind the mitzvos, then our performance will be robot-like and bland. The Chayei Adam introduces another fundamental lesson from our verse. He says that the word u’shmartem also means to anticipate as when the Torah tells us about Yaakov. “V’aviv shomar es hadovar – And his father (Yaakov) looked forward to the matter (the fulfi llment of Yosef’s dreams).” The Chayei Adam elaborates that, as much as possible, we should avoid doing mitzvos on the spur of the moment. Rather, we should take a little time in anticipation to prepare for them. In that way, he says, we will do them thoughtfully rather that mechanically. The Gemora in Berachos tells us that the Chasidim HaRishonim, the ancient pious ones, used to spend a shaah preparing themselves before davening. Surprisingly, this is mentioned in Shulchan Orech. The classic defi nition of shaah is an hour though nowadays the majority of people don’t even spend an hour on their prayers. However, the word shaah is also translated as a moment – for the word shaah also means to turn, as in the posuk, “V’el minchoso lo sha-asah – To his meal offering He did not turn.” It takes only a moment to turn and it is for this type of shaah that the Shulchan Orech is referring. We all must spend at least a moment before praying to contemplate that we are now standing in front of Hashem and talking to Him. Similarly, we should take a moment before putting on tefi llin to think that we binding our hands and binding our minds to the service of Hashem. One of my favorite examples of this discipline is a story concerning the Skulena Rebbe. He was once seen going to a public restroom. Upon coming out, he went right in again and then came back out again. When asked about this, he explained that as he left the restroom, he saw that no one else was there and he wanted to turn off the light to save money for the public. Now, this is a mitzvah of hashovas aveidah, returning something that would have been lost to the public. He didn’t want to do this mitzvah without doing some preparation but he didn’t want to prepare in the restroom. So, he went out, made his mental preparation, and went back in to shut off the light and then he came back out again. Another classic example of such behavior is how Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, Zt”l, Zy”a, used to keep a tiny container of water in his pocket. Before entering his home, he would take out the water and apply some to straighten out his beard. He would explain that since he lived in harmony with his rebbetzin, and the Talmud teaches us, “Ish v’isha sholom beineihem, Shechina shru’ah beineihem – A husband and wife who live in peace with each other, the Divine Presence is in their midst.” He therefore was straightening out his hair in preparation for receiving the Shechina. The Chayei Adam concludes that he knows from personal experience that any time he did a mitzvah on the spur of the moment, his mitzvah observance suffered. Finally, the word u’shmartem can mean to pine for something and this too is the proper attitude for mitzvos. We should train ourselves to look forward doing our mitzvos. The premier example of this attitude is the mitzvah of sefi ra. That on a national level we demonstrate in unison an excited countdown towards Torah. But this should be a mindset for all of our mitzvos. We should look forward to the time we spend in shul rather than being the fi rst one to fold up our tallis and make it to the exit. In the merit of fi ne tuning our mitzvah performance, may Hashem bless us with long life, good health, and everything wonderful. THE RIGHT WAY TO DO OUR MITZVOS by, Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss “We should avoid doing mitzvos on the spur of the moment. We should take a little time in anticipation to prepare for them...we will do them thoughtfully rather that mechanically.” (718) 377-8016 The Nine Days & Visiting Day #1 Edition, 2013 57 Open 7 Days 10AM-7PM Call for information: (845) 583-1000 Fax: 583-0000 • www.payneswatersports.com 1548 St. Hwy. 17B in White Lake – 7 Miles West of Monticello Raceway (2000 ft.
