Strategies for using music in developing listening skills of B1 level learners

2.1. DEFINITION OF MUSIC AND SONGS
- Murphey names songs as ‘adolescent motherese’. According to him, ‘motherese’ means the highly affective and musical language that adults use to communicate with infants. As toddlers grow up they get less and less of that language. The language vanishes slowly as children develop and them may be replaced by a song. A typical example of ‘motherese’ speech may be a lullaby. Interestingly, people talk about a song at least two dissimilar ways. The first is as a purely musical work. On the other hand, a song might be understood as a rendition, that is, a realization of that song in a performance, a recording or a written material.
Additionally, it is crucial to take a broad view of songs. They incorporate not only the tune and the lyrics, but also all of the contexts in which it is created, produced and consumed. It is important where the song was performed and by whom, the audience and the technology that produced it. BDictionary.com provides seven entries under the headword music. The first explanation says that “music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color” role is to describe emotions and there are four essential features which characterize music.
- The second definition says that these are “the tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both.” In fact, in this explanation it as all about instruments and voice. Simply, music is instruments or voices (or both) people hear. According to our Uzbek curriculum, one of the objectives explains that learner should be able to: “Understand and produce correctly complex texts and messages both orally andin writing in daily life situations, usinglinguistic and non-linguistic resources in order to get a satisfactory and fluent communication”. There are some basic competences considered essential that should be developed in all subjects of the curriculum.

The following table shows the basic competences in Uzbek curriculum:

However, within the Uzbek education programme, teachers usually do not have enough time to teach this skill as it is required because they only have three hours per week taking into account the typical setbacks in the classroom and the great majority of the time is used to go into grammar because it is the base of the language.

Furthermore, the student is in a social, cultural and linguistic context where the English language is not often present and he or she does not need it to interact and survive in his or her life. In short, these are not the most suitable conditions to develop the desired or required level. For this reason, this study will try to explore the characteristics of the speaking skills and propose some ways of practicing speaking and giving feedback. Or most people, the ability to speak a language is synonymous with knowing that language. Nevertheless, “speaking in a second or foreign language has often been viewed as the most demanding of the four skills”.
What specifically makes speaking in a second or foreign language difficult?
Brown labels speaking as the most challenging skill for students because of the set of features that characterize oral discourse:

  • Contractions, vowel reductions and elision;

  • The use of slang and idioms:

- The need to interact with at least one other speaker;

- Pronunciation;
- Fluency.
The most difficult aspect of spoken English is that it is always accomplished via interaction with al least one other speaker and this is one reason why many of us were shocked and disappointed when we used our second or foreign language for the first time in real interaction: We had not been prepared for spontaneous communication and could not cope with all of its simultaneous demands.
However, human communication is a complex process. People need communication when they want to say something, transmit information or need to speak. Speakers use communication when they want to express or inform someone about something. They use language according to their purpose and it is necessary for there to be a listener and a speaker for effective communication.
