Course description
Computer-oriented numerical methods for scientific problems. Topics include error analysis, Taylor series, solutions of equations, linear simultaneous equations, and interpolation.
This course also includes: Roots of non-linear equations: Newton-Raphson, secant methods, Solutions of linear systems: Gauss, Gauss-Jordan elimination, matrix inversion, Eigenvalues and eigenvectors, applications, Integration and discrete summations: Trapezoidal, Simpson, Romberg method, Gauss method, multiple integral, Solutions of ODE: initial value and boundary value problems, Euler’s and Runge-Kutta methods

Specific learning Outcomes

  • Recognize when numerical methods can be employed to solve problems in mathematics

  • Apply numerical methods in solving systems of linear equations

  • Solve initial-value problems in ordinary differential equations

  • Estimate eigenvalues and eigenvectors

  • Use mathematical packages to complement and apply the topics encountered
