Slide 4 – Observation Rubric
Mentees open their workbooks to the observation rubric. Give Mentees 2 minutes to read through the rubric. Review the rubric: Example script: You will use the same rubric for ALL observations. Look at the top– All CoP Sessions. These two items are from the 6Ps. They should be in all of your lessons. Students should be engaged, and they should speak in English. Look at CoP 1 – These are TESOL’s 6 Principles. There are only 5 because one is included in the All classes section. Which one is it? The section CoP 2 – Building Routines will be covered in the second CoP session. The section CoP3 – Giving Clear Instructions will be covered in our third CoP session. We will practice using this rubric in a minute. Transition: Now that we’ve looked at the rubric, let’s explore the 3 observations you’re expected to do. The first observation is a self-observation. Slide 5-14 – Self-Observation Introduce self-observations: Example script: A self-observation has 6 parts. You will: Write a lesson plan or use one from the book. Implement the lesson plan. If possible, videotape the lesson so that it can be viewed and reflected on later. Ask yourself the self-observation questions. Complete the Observation Rubric Submit the completed rubric and notes to your RPM. Transition: Let’s practice a self-observation. Think, Pair, Share: Give Mentees 1 minute to think about the questions: What is the purpose of a self-observation? How can we do a self-observation? Example script: What is the purpose of a self-observation? The purpose of a self-observation is to reflect on what went well during a lesson and what you could do to make the lesson even better. In a self-observation, you will reflect on your own teaching by asking yourself questions after you’ve taught a lesson. Find a partner. Look at the Observation Rubric. Notice “Did Well”, “Needs a Little Work”, “Needs a Lot of Work.” Not everything is perfect in a lesson. We learn from both what works and what doesn’t work. Remember, the purpose of our CoP is growth, so it is OK to admit that something didn’t work well. Look at the Self-observation Reflection Questions handout. We have 5 self-reflection observation questions. Let’s read them. Now let’s look at the Eco Park handout. What is the lesson objective? What is the grammar point? Imagine you taught the Eco Park lesson. Read the reflection out loud with your partner. When you finish, write the answers to the questions on the Self-Observation Reflection Questions handout about what you read in the Eco Park lesson. After you answer the questions, use your answers and the Eco Park lesson to complete the rubric. After the Mentees have finished the rubric, ask them how they filled it in. Discuss answers that may be different. Mentees may have different answers. If one Mentee has “needs a little work” and one had “needs a lot of work,” ask them why they have their opinions. It is ok for them to have different marks, but they should be able to tell why they gave those marks. All Mentees will do a self-observation this week. Mentees should follow the steps to doing a self-observation. All Mentees will discuss the observations next week using the self-observation questions and rubric. Download 403.38 Kb.
