Conception of feedback
Feedback is information given to the learner or teacher about the learner’s performance relative to learning goals or outcomes. It should aim towards (and be capable of producing) improvement in students’ learning. Feedback redirects or refocuses either the teacher’s or the learner’s actions to achieve a goal, by aligning effort and activity with an outcome. It can be about the output of the activity, the process of the activity, the student’s management of their learning or self-regulation, or them as individuals (which tends to be the least effective). This feedback can be verbal or written, or can be given through tests or via digital technology. It can come from a teacher or someone taking a teaching role.
Importance of giving feedback.
Feedback can improve a student's confidence, self-awareness and enthusiasm for learning. Effective feedback during the first year in university can aid the transition to higher education and may support student retention.
Different types such as informal , formal , formative , summative, student self and so on and they are known us how to give the feedback to pupils or students. Now I am going to give some my own reviews about giving feedback which I have experienced during my school attendances as a teacher.
Everyone knows to give feedback but it must be given by the basis on principles. There are a numerous of methods how to give feedback and using them student or pupils (learners) are supported by their teachers. Generally, before feedback giving methods become theories , several experiments are held and after achieving successful and effective results , then they can be applied in giving feedback processes. In short term, feedback giving methods can be created by the successful and effective results from the experiments dependently on some factors and principles.
For teachers, feedback giving should not be a common principle to remark the learners. It is very important to take into account positive or negative consequences which behind any feedback, given to students or pupils. Let’s take an example, some learners have a positive thoughts and interests about being taught subjects, on the contrary, some of them are not interested in that subject. From my personal experience , it makes worse to give inappropriate negative feedbacks for those learners who has little willing to learn the subject. As a result, it may cause the increase to tend extinction of even just a little interest of learning the subject. In this case some quiz games can be organized to make some interests on those learners. It is obvious that asking question, related to the topic or relating to their interests make some positive impressions about the subject and teacher, which learners might expect certain feedbacks.
Furthermore, during my teaching period, I found useful to apply opposite direction of giving feedback in some cases. How is it practically done? It can be explained with simple words , in order to gain to have stable steadfast in learner’s knowledge and to create psychological balance among them , negative feedback is given for those learners who has a certain attitude and positive feedback is given to for those students or pupils who has a uncertain attitude about that subject. In this feedback giving method teachers should be aware of having strong psychological knowledge.
From my observation , it is found that feedback from critical point of view can be helpful and motivates learner who studies with aspiration to assimilate and to focus on the subject. If a certain commendable feedback is always given to a learner, it may cause to descend the tendency of interests in learning the subject. In contrast to this case , with opposite point of view, motivating but negative feedback may result in tending to a deep learning the subject. Meanwhile , in order to obtain existing tendency to learn the subject positive spiritual motivation feedback is possibly given to the learner who has little interest or negative attitude in that subject. Let’s continue with an example, although, it may seem to us that some learners have low quality in studying , they may have leadership ability or managing skill. So appointment of those student or a pupil as a leader of the class or group , meanwhile step by step they are given by motivation feedback even with taking responsibility for being leader in learning , at the end , by the observations it is strongly believed that those learners can change their attitude and achieve success in that field. Consequently, this type of feedback giving strategy or what we call as a method plays main role in creation of positive atmosphere. To sum up with short term , taking into account observations, considered above , it is surely that leads to succeed in achieving to high results by opposite direction feedback giving.
Our general objection is by giving vital proper feedback to direct generation of a certain appropriate condition and well communication between teacher and learner without different conflicts. Giving the feedbacks can be easy but at the same time it can be difficult , nevertheless it should be oriented to seek the benefits of learners and also increase aspiration and interests in subject which is being learnt. Nowadays , the world and time is evolving rapidly, while people’s thinking is also growing. As for education system we may see a lot changes in concepts and idea of correlation between teacher and learner.
If teacher is not at the course or is old thinker and not at level of what learner wants , then it may be difficult to give a feedback to that learner and even at the same time it may cause unexpected negative consequences and ineffective in education quality. Whether we like it or not , nowadays every student has their own personal computers and phones. It can also be observed that by these development devices, some learners are getting developed their thing and world-outlook , on the contrary, other use them inappropriate and just waste their time. In this cases , basic feedback giving methods can be formed or created by the specific factor which must be taken into account such as for what purpose the learner or student is using them, generally how much time they spend on them and in what information makes them get interested and so on. I am going to add and share my propositions to give contemporary feedbacks and it could be useful and may serve as modern method. In this process not only teachers but parents are also involved. During upbringing and to give proper directions, parents are able to give their feedback to their children meanwhile there can also be possibility to consider feedbacks. Why is it necessary? Naturally, a child spends at least 12 hours out of daily 24 hours with their family members, whereas around 6-7 hours in school that can be indicated by the percentages respectively 25% in school 50 % with parents. During 24 hours parents have a more significant influencing time than influencing time by the teacher in school. Modern technologies help us to create knowledge phase data base for providing proper education and giving appropriate feedback. This school data base includes in all information related learner such as their knowledge , marks, attendance, skills, success and other qualities which serve as main feedback giving data base , except that by the special mobile applications , parents can be able to give feedback or get informed by feedbacks. In order to provide clear and fair education among teacher –learner – parent interconnection. It is an opportunity for everyone to express their opinions to each other, in which an evaluation rating is composed through feedback , given by teachers, parents and learners. Even teachers are included in rating system, addition to it, teacher or learner with high ranked are rewarded by bonuses in privileges and motivation prizes. It can be a really particular method and applied practically, this feedback ranking system may create healthy competition among learners and increase in knowledge.
It is vital to give a reasonable feedback by teacher to create positive condition and friendly interaction between teacher and learners. Accordingly, teacher must have the qualities which is able to interest in his or her subject, strong psychology understanding , being in world course and time-demand, well world outlook and well enough experience how to give proper feedback in his or her knowledge area. If teacher doesn’t have any sort of quality mentioned above or has little experience on feedback giving , they may face to troubles of lack remarking the students or pupils , beside that it may also cause to happen a conflict and misunderstanding between them. Appropriate feedback serve as basic factor of learner’s to increase their interests in attendance in this subject for the next lessons and to learn it. From the above , proper feedback given to learner can be the main reason to effect learner’s psychology. Teacher have to know every learner’s psychology , characters, qualities and on-goings and this is very important part of the feedback giving process. Let’s give an example , some of pupils want to be marked by only good or excellent marks and wants favorable feedbacks from the teacher and others. It is known that it is interesting to hear how outcome they get after doing their homework or passing the test , and any kind of failing results may cause also to their reputation , psychology and even disappointment subject. Although, to achieve positive results , good marks and commendable feedbacks are not easy , and learners should be deserving to them. To provide suitability of granting excellent feedbacks , except professional qualification , to know learner’s characters and psychological understanding perception are significantly essential. There are some interconnection attitude relating to their qualities between teacher and learner. Additionally, it is important that nowadays every teacher must know the demand of the time , and we should mention that with these teachers we can gain successful results and may also contribute to the progress of education system in school or any institutions. Young and demanding pedagogue who understands and knows the demands of the time , can make decisions of appropriate feedbacks. From the statements above, it comes to choose teacher with qualities and personalities, mentioned above. From my personal experiences , probability of how to hire pedagogue should be based on some factors below:
-strong psychological experience ;
-age (as much as young teacher);
- knows latest technological and demands change ;
-having a good world-outlook ;
-knows psychology well;
-hard working on himself and aspiring;
and others. By these qualities teacher can mark the learner correctly by giving right feedbacks.
At present time, new methods are used to give transparent feedbacks. Each feedback given by the teacher to pupils or student shows their knowledge , observance , reputation respectively to other learners and other qualities. This is why , each feedback must be clarified by the specific basis and reasons. These feedback can properly be motivation for their learnings. During my observations in school, I tried to find out a particular way to mark transparently and it can be a noticeable transparent marking testing (TMT) in order to give reasonable feedback which is based on learner’s knowledge and attitude. How it can be applied ? Special tickets with question are given to participating students or pupils in exam. Special ticket has only a once usage postcode instead of showing family or name which identifies candidate. This postcode belonging to which student or pupil is only known to whom, who is responsible for organizing exams. Teachers give their question list to that person, taking responsible for organizing exams or in short term to exam organizer and organizer adjusts tickets which is even not known to teachers. Teachers who are involved in controlling the exam are not permitted to check the answer sheets. Other subject teachers are involved in this process. By this transparent examination learners are marked by their results from exam, and they are given evidential feedbacks which are supported by the analysis of their results and level of knowledge.
In conclusion , In my opinion, not only a side is not enough to give your point of views to learner but also other sides are significant , above nearly all sides are considered to give transparent and appropriate feedbacks. We may suggest as a pedagogue that knowing the importance of results and realizing the influences on the future thoughts on subjects of those learner’s and then we should give a feedback to each learner. Every method which is used to give feedback and which is including necessary qualities must serve to create proper communication and attitude between learners and teachers.
