Classification of phraseological units by their expressive-stylistic qualities
Being part of the vocabulary, phraseological units with names of animals form several stylistic seams. From the stylistic point of view (i.e. depending on the primarily using in one of the spheres) they are divided into bookish, spoken and vernacular phraseological units. The author of this classification is Cunin.
Bookish phraseological units with names of animals are less than spoken phraseological units, they are usually taken from the biblical plots and antique mythology, e.g. lost sheep, swan’s song, golden half, blue bird. Such phraseological units are usually neutral from the emotional point of view.
Spoken phraseological units – are stable combination of words that are primarily used only in the spoken language. Spoken-household phraseological units are differ from mistletoe phraseological units by more narrow sphere of using and low expressive-stylistic characteristics (affectionately, ironic, scornful, humorous, familiar and etc.) E.g. To tease a goose, to make an elephant from the fly; flies are dying; clerical rat.
Vernacular phraseolgical units with names of animals have lower stylistic character than spoken phraseological units, e.g. as a saddle on the cow; where cancers live in the winter; as a pig in the oranges and so on. This group of phraseological units is characterized with strong emotional features; in a lot of cases they have negative character, e.g. goose gripping – “cunning, dexterous person” to twirl ox – “to fence with a question”.

The latter feature is closely connected with the flexibility of idiomatic expressions. They cover different registers and include a stylistically wide range of vocabulary. Originating from a variety of sources, they greatly enrich the language. There is a tendency towards creativity in idiomatic expressions.
