your
predictions on a separate sheet.

Very nice area. Scary slopes.
Somewhere it's built very steep.
Well, they're very steep and icy.
Of course that's exciting as well

that's right.
Perhaps in Australia. Yes that's
right. But I think it's very

something to do at winter,
during the winter.

Listen to Phases* 1 and 2 on the tape to see if your questions were similar to the
interviewer's questions.
Rewind the tape and listen again to Phases 1 and 2 and assess the responses Pehr
gives to the interviewer, according to the categories below. For each of the three
categories, fluency, grammar and vocabulary, mark X on the line to indicate your
assessment. Then, if you would like to, read the transcript on page 173 to reflect
on
your assessment.

Phase 3.
In this phase, the candidate asks the questions. The interviewer will tell you about
a certain situation. The interviewer will give you a card which explains the
situation and has a few ideas for questions on it. You need to find out information
about it by asking as many questions as you can. Take a few moments to look at
the card before you ask the questions. Try not to use the exact words on the card
for every question. The interviewer responds to your questions.
Pehr's card looks like this.
Task FURNITURE ENQUIRY
You are new at the university and you have found some cheap
accommodation, a one bedroom flat. Unfortunately, the flat is unfurnished.
Ask the Accommodation Officer for assistance with finding inexpensive
furniture.

where to find items needed
• where to sell when studies completed
• advice on most useful items

down.

Listen to Phase 3 of this interview. As you listen, circle any expressions in the
box
which describe Pehr's conversation style and his manner. Add suitable
adjectives
of your own.
Compare the questions Pehr asks with the ones you wrote. In what ways are they
different?

Below are the questions that Pehr asked. Read them through, and compare them
with the prompts on the card. Think again about what kinds of questions he asked
and whether or not you think he has asked enough.
1 . Well, can you help me please?
2.
Well, it's like that I have found cheap accommodation here in our last day in
the newspaper and er it's a one bedroom flat and but it's unfurnished so I
want some advice how I could find some cheap furniture because I'm a
student and I haven't so much money as you.
3.
Well I think it would be a year, I think, say, yes.
4.
So it's not so big difference between renting or buying from, if I'm here for a
year?
5.
OK. So it's possible to... to sell them later on to another student?
6- Great. Where do you think I can find some cheap used furniture then for a
student?
7. No. Yes. Preferably, yes.

8.
Yeah. From other students maybe?
9.
OK. Here. In Adelaide?
10. OK. Good. And urn, what do you think? Is there, is there any possibility to
use desks here in er at the university? Or do you think I have to buv a desk as
well?
1 1 . If you want to study, yes. Maybe.
12. OK. OK. Thank you very much.
Note: Remember, every candidate approaches the same task in a slightly
different way. There is no one fixed list of questions for this Phase 3.
